The Centralia Fire Department (CFD) is the agency that provides fire suppression to Centralia, Missouri. The Centralia Fire Department protects an area of 2.5 square miles and a population of approximately 3,800 from 2 stations strategically located around the city.

History

[edit]

The Boone County Fire Protection District currently responds to all medical emergencies and motor vehicle accidents/extrications within the City of Centralia in an informal agreement that has lasted for twenty years. In 2007 BCFPD Station 10, located outside of Centralia, responded to 422 calls within the city limits[1].

In 2009, the Centralia Fire Department entered into a new mutual aid agreement where both agencies would be dispatched to EMS calls within the city limits of Centralia. Firefighters with CFD have undergone training to obtain First Responder certification and will also carry EMS equipment on their apparatus[2].

Emergency Services

[edit]

Both Boone County Fire Protection District and Centralia Fire Department units are dispatched to EMS calls within the City of Centralia. Dispatching is handled by The Public Service Joint Communications Center in Columbia.

The Centralia Fire Department has undergone mutual aid training with the Boone County Fire Protection district to practice vehicle extrication techniques, with the intention of adding vehicle extrication to their services provided.

Major Incidents

[edit]

On January 28, 1982 an accident involving natural gas started the biggest fire in the history of Centralia Fire Department. Heavy equipment operating around a pressure regulating system ruptured that system and caused natural gas at a high pressure to flow into a low pressure line. Of the 167 buildings affected by the subsequent natural gas flow, 12 were completely destroyed and 32 sustained medium to heavy damage[3].
