Background

[edit]

Midnight68 was blocked on English Wikipedia in 2010. The block was placed on behalf of the English Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee. The account was blocked on Commons on the same day. The reason given for the block was "Activities damaging to the reputation of Wikimedia / Trolling". Days before Midnight68 was blocked on Commons, there was a deletion discussion about his uploads. In that discussion it is claimed that the user going as Midnght68 on Wikimedia projects had previously been banned from such websites as DeviantArt, 4chan, Encyclopedia Dramatica, and YouTube. They identified themselves as a Wikia user named "TGcomix". Jimbo Wales acknowledges that he recalls Midnight68 in relation to "Spanking Art Wiki" which was banned from Wikia "for all the obvious reasons".

Some of the images created and uploaded by Midnight68 were alleged to be virtual child pornography during the Commons deletion discussion. Although I personally doubt that it would meet the definition of child pornography in most countries, File:Kogaru1.jpg has a "legal disclaimer" attached to it that "The use of this image is illegal in Russia". Other images from the same user (but uploaded by sockpuppets) are similarly marked. File:YuuseiShonenPanel.jpg, File:Anime Style Shower Scene002.png, and File:KodomoNoSaori.png may well break the law in some countries.

Sockpuppets

[edit]

Despite being indef blocked on Commons for over a decade, the person behind the Midnight68 account has continued to upload images. They have simply created new sockpuppet accounts. They have made little or no effort to disguise the fact that they are the same person. In fact, they have often used the same pseudonym "Simon Kirby" as the creator of the images. They have created and curated categories for their own images such as Category:Landmark Comics] (a self-created fictitious brand) with many sub-categories and dozens of images. The idea seems to be not only to upload these images, but to expose them to as many people as possible. The sockpuppets upload the images and insert them in articles on various language Wikipedias.

A sockpuppetry investigation was started in 2019 on Commons, but ended in no result despite obvious behavioral connections. Here is the list of sockpuppets from that case:

Proposal

[edit]

I believe that Trust & Safety were already aware of this user, but I contacted them in June 2022 to be certain. The Midnight68 account has not been globally banned or locked. Commons has turned a blind eye to the sockpuppetry and uploading of questionable material by this user over the past decade. I propose that the Community ban this user.
