Transport in Nothern Territory is provided by a wide range of infrastructure. Much of the state's transportation is concentrated in its capital city, Darwin, which is home to nearly 140,000 people - approximately 55% of the state's total population[1][2]. Transport in NT is predominantly road, which links Darwin with sporadically scattered towns across the state. Additionally, due to its proximity from other large cities in Australia, air transport is used frequently for interstate travel.
History
[edit]Roads
[edit]The main highway in NT is the Stuart Highway, connecting Darwin to the rest of the country. This highway begins at Darwin CBD, and runs to Port Augusta, South Australia, passing through the NT town of Alice Springs.[3]
Branching off the Stuart Highway is the Barkly Highway, which is the primary road connection between NT and Queensland. This highway begins around 15km north of Tennant Creek, travelling east to the Queensland towns of Mount Isa City and terminating at Cloncurry.
The Victoria Highway branches off the Stuart Highway at Katherine and continues westwards towards Western Australia. Both the Barkly and Victoria Highway make up a section of Highway 1, a collection of highways that circumnavigate Australia.
The majority of Northern Territory's arterial roads are unpaved, dirt roads.
Rail
[edit]Air
[edit]The main airport in the Northern Territory is Darwin International Airport, which serves the city of Darwin and nearby regional towns. Flight routes are offered to all other state capitals in Australia, with the exception of Hobart, and also regional towns such as Alice Springs and Katherine. Limited international flights are available, offered to only 3 destinations, Dili, Denpasar and Singapore, offered by Jetstar, Qantas and Singapore Airlines respectively.[4]
The second largest airport in Northern Territory is Alice Springs Airport, which serves the nearby town of Alice Springs.
