Andrew L. Yarrow

Andrew L. Yarrow is a senior fellow at the Aspen Institute, a historian of 20th-century America, and a writer on issues relating to economics, public policy, culture. and politics and the intersections among them. In addition to his four books -- Thrift: History of An American Cultural Movement (2014), Measuring America: How Economic Growth Came to Define American Greatness in Late 20th-Century America (2010), Forgive Us Our Debts: The Intergenerational Dangers of Fiscal Irresponsibility (2010), and Latecomers: Children of Parents Over 35 (1991)—he was a reporter with The New York Times during the 1980s and 1990s, covering subjects ranging from the arts and education to business and social trends. He has taught U.S. history, journalism, and public policy at American University, where he is Historian-in-Residence, focusing on post-World War II America, the Cold War, and 20th-century economics. He is also an affiliate faculty member at George Mason University. Yarrow is embarking on two new books projects.

Yarrow is also an affiliate scholar with the Institute for American Values, and has worked for and been a consultant to organizations ranging from the U.S. Department of Labor (where he was a political appointee during the Clinton Administration), the World Bank, and UNICEF to the Brookings Institution, the Kettering Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Export-Import Bank, Public Agenda, Oxfam America, and the American Institutes for Research. In addition to the Times, he has written articles for many newspapers, magazines, and scholarly journals, including the San Francisco Chronicle, the Baltimore Sun, USA Today, the Washington Monthly, the Washington Post, the Denver Post, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Los Angeles Times, the Florida Sun Sentinel, the New York Daily News, the Tampa Tribune, the Wall Street Journal, Education Week, Travel & Leisure, and New York Magazine. He has written many scholarly articles, blogs and chapters of books. Yarrow also has spoken on and moderated many public panels and has appeared often on TV and radio.
