Schlumberger Business Consulting (SBC) is the global management consultancy arm of Schlumberger, specializing in the oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) industry. With 200 consultants operating from 15 offices around the world, SBC's capabilities range from strategy and organization to operational efficiency. SBC headquarters are located in Paris, France.

Overview

[edit]

SBC appeared relatively recently on the management consulting scene as it was established in 2004.[1] The underlying idea was to combine Schlumberger's technical expertise and knoweldge of the oil & gas with pure management consulting skills. The target was to create a management consultancy strongly focused on E&P, which would compete against the more generalist traditional management consultancies. Over 9 years it witnessed a rapid growth, and Schlumberger Business Consulting is now one of the largest energy sector management consulting firms.[2] SBC is managed as an independent entity from Schlumberger, and maintains separate P&L responsibility within it.

Competitors

[edit]

SBC's top competitors in the E&P management consulting market are McKinsey & Company, The Boston Consulting Group, Booz & Company and Bain & Company

Clients

[edit]

SBC clients encompass International Oil Companies (IOCs), National Oil Companies (NOCs) and Independents[3].

Organization

[edit]

The SBC organization is centered on five core capabilities: strategy, organization & talent management, operations improvement, technology management, and M&A and post-merger integration. Geographies are structured as Areas (North & South America, Europe, Middle East and Africa, and Asia), each managed by a Director. Teams are not structured by country: consultants are asked to serve clients on a global basis, to pursue opportunities within the area but also lend assistance to teams in other areas.

Offices

Publications

[edit]

SBC publishes an annual HR benchmark, to keep track of oil & gas engineer recruitment and provide insight on the supply and demand of graduates in energy engineering[5].
