Jane Ryan (born 14 June 1937?) is one of the pioneers of the early music revival figure-headed by Arnold Dolmetsh. She was a viola da gamba player, widowed by the passing of luthier Dietrich Kessler in 2006[1]. Her main instrument was the bass viol, although in consorts and in her teaching at NORVIS, she would frequently play the treble viol and the pardessus de viole. She played in consorts with Marco Pallis, Arnold Dolmetsch, and the Julian Bream Consort.
Biography
[edit]Jane Ryan was born in Burton Bradstock, Dorset on 14 June 1937? and began her studies on the cello, attending the royal College of Music, under (teacher's name?). Under the encouragement of Arnold Dolmetsch, she took up studies with the viola da gamba, joining the Julian Bream Consort in 19??
Teaching
[edit]Jane Ryan was a long-serving tutor at NORVIS, also taking part in many overseas summer courses in addition to her students taught from her home in North London.
