Hotel Vintage Plaza

[edit]

The Hotel Vintage Plaza, formerly the Imperial Hotel and The Plaza Hotel, is a historic hotel building in downtown downtown Portland, Oregon, United States. It was completed in 1894 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.[1] Hotel Vintage Plaza is one of three Kimpton hotels in the Portland area, with the other two being Riverplace Hotel and Hotel Monaco Portland.

History

[edit]

Construction began in 1892, and the hotel opened in March 1894.[3] The building is in the Richardsonian Romanesque architectural style.[3] It has also been known as the Wells Building, after one of its builders, George F. Wells.[4]

A major expansion was built in 1909 in the form of a separate building, adjacent, known as the New Imperial Hotel. At the end of 1949, the two buildings that had comprised the Imperial were made into separate hotels, when the new building was sold. The original, 1894 building was renamed the Plaza Hotel, while the newer building retained the Imperial name [3] (named the Hotel Lucia since 2002).

A glass false storefront was removed in a renovation done in the 1980s, revealing the structure's lower level stonework. The hotel's former name appears in the stonework above the Washington Street entrance.[5] By at least the early 1980s[4] the building's use as a hotel had ended, although it continued to be commonly referred to as the Plaza Hotel, and was in use as an office building, formally known as Wells Financial Center.[6] However, it suffered from a high vacancy rate, attributed in part to an excess of available office space in downtown Portland.[6]

The building was designated a Portland historical landmark in spring 1985[4] and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 2, 1985.[1][7]

In 1989, the building was acquired by Kimco Hotel Management (now Kimpton Hotels & Restaurant Group) and remodeled as a boutique hotel.[8]Renamed the Hotel Vintage Plaza, it reopened in May 1991.[8]

About Kimpton Hotels

[edit]

The Kimpton Hotel & Restaurant Group Inc. is an American hotel and restaurant company. Founded in 1981 by William (Bill) Kimpton and led by Chief Executive Officer Michael Depatie, it is the largest chain of boutique hotels in the United States.[8] The company's headquarters are in San Francisco, California. All its properties are located in the U.S. Most Kimpton properties are marketed under their own independent names as boutique hotels; however, in 2005, the company launched two sub-brands within the company's brand: Hotel Palomar and Hotel Monaco. Each hotel has a restaurant or bar that is marketed as upscale or trendy. The company's loyalty program is called Kimpton InTouch.[9]. CNNMoney.com listed it as the #16 best company to work for in 2012.[10]

Under contract, the company also manages and operates hotels owned by other entities.

About Vintage Plaza

[edit]

The hotel is located in the center of downtown Portland, Oregon adjacent to Pioneer Courthouse Square, a cultural center of Portland, also called Pioneer Square, affectionately known by locals as "Portland's living room” and ranked as the world’s fourth-best public square. Each room at the Vintage Plaza Hotel is themed after a local winery or vineyard. It was named one of the "Top 500 Hotels in the World" by Travel + Leisure magazine,[citation needed] was named "most romantic hotel" by Citysearch Portland,[11] and voted Best Rehearsal Dinner Site in Oregon by Oregon Bride magazine for 2010 and 2011.[12]

All Kimpton hotels are “pet-friendly” and many of the locations, including Hotel Vintage Plaza, offer the “Guppy Love” program, which provides guests with an in-room Goldfish companion upon request.[13] The hotel also includes other amenities such as personalized room preferences via Kimpton’s InTouch rewards program, hosted daily wine hour, 24-hour fitness center, on-site salon services at Salon615, and in-room spa services.

The hotel also provides fine-dining at Pazza Ristorante, located adjacent to the hotel and specializing in regional Italian cuisine and wines presented in a local restaurant setting including private dining and full bar service.
