Christian Svarfvar (born 1982) is a Swedish classical violinist. He is known for his performances with major orchestras and his recordings of both classical and contemporary works.
Early life and education
[edit]Svarfvar was born in Sweden to professional violinist parents. He began playing the violin at age four, studying initially with the Suzuki Method before continuing his studies with his father, Sven-Ole Svarfvar, a respected Scandinavian violinist and teacher.[1]
He pursued his studies at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and later at the Juilliard School in New York, where he graduated in 2005.[2]
Career
[edit]Svarfvar made his debut as a soloist at the age of twelve, performing Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra.[1] In 2008, he was appointed "rising star" by the European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO), which led to performances in prestigious venues across Europe.[2]
He has since performed as a soloist with numerous orchestras, including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Malmö Symphony Orchestra, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra and Simon Bolivar Orchestra.[1] Svarfvar has also collaborated with renowned conductors such as Vassily Sinaisky, Hannu Lintu, and Joana Carneiro.[2]
As a chamber musician, Svarfvar has performed with artists including Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, and Martin Fröst.[2]
Contemporary music
[edit]Svarfvar has a particular interest in contemporary music. He has collaborated with composers such as Howard Shore, Kaija Saariaho, and Anders Hillborg. In 2007, he premiered Howard Shore's violin concerto "Eastern Promises" with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.[1]
