The Department of Mines and Energy[b] was established on 26/2/1996 and abolished on 22/2/2001.
It was a Queensland Government department responsible for administration of mining, provision of electricity to all regions of Queensland and mineral exploration. The Department of Mines and Energy was abolished in February 2001. The Mines component of the Department was amalgamated with the Department of Natural Resources which became the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (disambiguation) (NRM).
History

[edit]The Department of Mines and Energy was established from the renamed Department of Minerals and Energy, on 26 February 1996.[1]
Abolition
[edit]The Department of Mines and Energy was abolished in February 2001. The Mines component of the Department was amalgamated with the Department of Natural Resources which became the Department of Natural Resources and Mines (disambiguation) (NRM).[1]
Function
[edit]The agency had the following responsibilities:[1]
- The Department of Mines and Energy carried out the functions of: minerals and energy explosives, geological survey, electricity (including generation, transmission and distribution, licensing of electrical workers) gas, health and safety (including mining), environment (including Management of mining), titles (including mining), royalties; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander matters (including Mineral Resources).
- As part of its electricity responsibilities the Department oversaw statutory authorities. The Department provided electricity to all regions of Queensland and undertook extensive exploration to uncover new areas of mineral occurrence.

Administrative structure
[edit]The Department consisted of seven Divisions: Energy Planning, Energy Monitoring and Regulation, Geological Survey, Environmental Compliance, Safety and Health (including SIMTARS), Administration, and Resource Development, plus six Regional Offices. On 10 May 1999, a Cabinet decision prompted the movement of the Department's environmental management of the mining industry to the Environmental Protection Agency. The transfer of this function was intended to amalgamate all functions relating to environmental regulation and streamline enforcement processes. As part of this administrative change, Warden's Courts were replaced by a new Land and Resources Tribunal to hear and determine land title and other land owner objections relating to the grant of mining titles.[1]
