Establishment

The Department of Public Works and Housing was formed on 26 February 1996 when the former Administrative Services Department was amalgamated with the Housing program formerly run by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Planning.[1]

The department was part of the Minister for Public Works and Housing portfolio from 26 February 1996 to 26 June 1998.[1]

Abolition

After the 1998 election, the department was separated into two new departments - the Department fo Public Works and the Department of Housing (Administrative Arrangements Order (No. 1) 1998.[1]

Administrative structure

At its creation, the department had eight business units and divisions which reported to the Deputy Director-General:[1]

Additionally, on 4 April 1996 part of the Information Services Branch within the Department of Premier and Cabinet responsible for the operation of the service desk, office systems, technical and operation matters, network and communications matters, applications, training, and central and distributed services was amalgamated with the Centre for Information Technology and Communications (CITEC) within the Department of Public Works and Housing.[1]
