Many African Americans have moved to Phoenix recently.[1]

History

Mary Green was the first African American to live in Phoenix, Arizona. Green moved to Phoenix in 1868 from Arkansas along with a family she worked for as a servant. Green was born into slavery.[2]

Politics

Councilman Calvin Goode was the longest serving member of the Phoenix City Council, serving a total of 22 years

There have been four African American members of the Phoenix City Council. The first African American elected to City Council was Dr. Morrison Warren who served from 1966 to 1970. Calvin Goode was elected to the Phoenix City Council and served 11 consecutive terms, from 1972 to 1994. Goode is the longest-serving council member in Phoenix history, serving a total of 22 years.[3]

Though there has never been an African American mayor of the city of Phoenix, there have two African American mayors of cities in the Phoenix metro area: Coy Payne who was the mayor of Chandler, Arizona from 1990-1994 and Corey Woods who has been the mayor of Tempe, Arizona since 2021.
