Rebecca Kimitch (journalist)

Rebecca Kimitch won a Local Reporting Pulitzer Prize with Rob Kuznia and Frank Suraci in 2015 for an investigation into corruption at Centinela Valley Union High School District.

Kimitch was part of the team who was awarded the 2014 Scripps Howard Foundation Award for Community Journalism and a 2015 National Headliner Award for investigative reporting for the same investigation.

While working for the Torrance Daily Breeze, Kimitch, Kuznia, and Suraci uncovered fiscal corruption within the small school district of Centinela Valley, and their work resulted in criminal investigations of multiple staff members. They uncovered that the superintendent was taking up to $400,000 in benefits, his base pay was $271,000, while the school district suffered as a result. Kimitch also served as a jury member for the 2016 Local Reporting Pulitzer.

PERSONAL LIFE

Rebecca Kimitch was born and raised in Denver, Colorado. She graduated from Manual High School and went on to attend Northwestern University.

Kimitch worked freelance in South America, at The Tico Times paper in Costa Rica from 2004-2006, and at Congressional Quarterly in Washington, D.C between 2006-2007.

Kimitch worked at the Torrance Daily Breeze where she won a Pulitzer Prize alongside Rob Kuznia and Frank Suraci.

Kimitch has been employed as a Principal Public Affairs Representative with Metropolitan Water District of Southern California since 2016.

Kimitch lives in Los Angeles with her husband, Fabián Borges ( A political science professor at California State University in San Bernadino, California), also a former Tico Times reporter, and their daughter.
