EastEnders is a British soap opera, examining the domestic and professional lives of working class people who live in the fictitious London Borough of Walford in the East End of London. The show airs on BBC One and entered its 21st broadcasted year on 3 January 2005 with its 2864th episode, with Kathleen Hutchison continuing her role as executive producer until Kate Harwood took over, with John Yorke acting as executive produce until Harwood's appointment. EastEnders aired 209 episodes in 2005, with the the typical week comprising four half-hour episodes on BBC One, in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays.

Cast and characters

Billy Murray joined the cast in late 2004 as Johnny Allen; the character first appeared on 4 January.[1] The characters of Tina Stewart, Johnny's girlfriend, and Ruby Allen, Johnny's daughter, were announced on 3 February 2005. Charlotte Avery was cast as Tina, whereas Louisa Lytton was cast as Ruby; Tina first appeared on 15 March and Ruby debuted on 18 March.[2] Tina later departed on 1 November. The castings of Petra Letang as Naomi Julien, a nurse who knows Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), Ray Brooks as Joe Macer, a love interest for Pauline Fowler (Wendy Richard) who is recently-widowed, and Kara Tointon as Dawn Swann, the sister of Mickey Miller (Joe Swash) who is billed as "a real charmer with a touch of the footballer's wife about her", were announced on 23 June 2005.[3] Dawn and Mickey's father, Mike Swann (Mark Wingett), also debuted alongside Dawn on 26 September. The character of Honey Edwards, the final regular character to be introduced in 2005, was announced on 21 September 2005, with Emma Barton cast in the role.[4]

Actor Alex McSweeney reprised his role as Graham Foster for one episode on 24 January. Nicholas Bailey, who portrayed Anthony Trueman for three years, returned for a three episode guest stint in February. Letitia Dean returned to filming after taking maternity leave in 2004; her character Sharon Watts returned on 18 February.[5] Rebecca Miller, the biological daughter of Sonia and Martin Fowler (James Bye), was reintroduced on 22 March, with the role recast to Jade Sharif. Steve McFadden was confirmed to return to the show following his sabbatical across 2004 on 11 February 2005; his character Phil Mitchell returned for two episodes in April, before returning permanently in September.[6] Jessie Wallace (Kat Moon) returned to the show in May, following an absence for maternity leave.[7] In July 2005, Wallace announced her intentions to leave the series; Kat departed on 25 December.[8] It was announced on 28 January 2005 that Barbara Windsor would return to her role as Peggy Mitchell after an extended sabbatical; the character returned on 8 September.[9] Following the returns of McFadden and Windsor, Ross Kemp was announced to be reprising his role as Grant Mitchell for a guest stint on 22 May 2005; the character returned in October, before departing on 10 November.[10] Mike Reid reprised the role of Frank Butcher for four episodes in December.[11] This marked his final appearance on the show following Reid's death in 2008.[12]

2005 encompassed several axings as a result of the changes in executive producers. Characters who departed as a result of being axed included: Kate Mitchell (Jill Halfpenny), Spencer Moon (Christopher Parker), Den Watts (Leslie Grantham), Andy Hunter (Michael Higgs), the Ferreira family and Sasha Perkins (Jemma Walker), Juley Smith (Joseph Kpobie), Derek Harkinson (Ian Lavender), Danny Moon (Jake Maskall), Jake Moon (Joel Beckett) and Nana Moon (Hilda Braid).[13] However, Kpobie and Beckett were given reprieves and returned in September.[14] Michelle Ryan and Kim Medcalf's intentions to quit their respective roles as Zoe Slater and Sam Mitchell were announced on 29 January 2005.[15] Zoe made her final appearance on 24 June, whereas Sam departed on 17 November, marking Metcalf's final appearance in the role.[16] Tracy-Ann Oberman was announced to be leaving the series on 6 July 2005; her character Chrissie Watts departed on 9 December.[17] Shane Richie decided to quit his role as Alfie Moon in April 2005; Richie's departure aired on 25 December alongside that of Wallace.[18] Nigel Harman and Dean's departures from their respective roles as Dennis Rickman and Sharon Rickman were announced on 13 August 2005, althought it was later reported that Dean would only be taking a break from the series. Dennis departed on 30 December and Sharon departed in January 2006.[19]

During 2005, EastEnders aired three half-hour episodes in a time slot of 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays. The episodes were broadcast on BBC One. A weekly omnibus edition was also broadcast on Sundays. Kathleen Hutchison continued her role as executive producer until Kate Harwood took over, with John Yorke acting as executive produce until Harwood's appointment.
