Elton Johnson (born 10 September 1965) is a former professional footballer and Cricket player from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He has played internationally for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines national football team and was a member of the team for the 1994 FIFA World Cup qualification.[1] Additionally, he was a member of the West Indies cricket team and played with them for over a decade representing them at both the youth and senior level. Johnson is one of the only dual-sport international athletes in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and remains widely known by Vincentians to this day as an integral part of the most successful Vincentian national football team in history.
Football Career

[edit]Elton Johnson spent the majority of his football career playing for Frenches Football Club, based in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. During this time, he established himself as one of the nation’s top goalkeepers. Frenches Football Club, known now as GMA Kingstown Frenches FC, was a prominent team in the local football scene, competing in the national league in Saint Vincent. Johnson's tenure with the club coincided with a crucial era for football development in the country as many of the players from his team were included in the national team during international competition.
International Career
[edit]Johnson spent the later half of his career with the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines national football team. He most notably featured in the team's campaign during the qualification rounds for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Johnson played in high-profile matches against teams such as Mexico and Honduras, getting to compete against some of the best players in the world. The 1994 World Cup Qualifying rounds were significant for the national team as it was, and still is, the farthest they have made into world cup qualifying. This success on the world stage was seen as a source of pride for many Vincentians as they were able to cheer on their nation against some of the worlds' best.

Cricket Career

He represented the national team from 1982 to 1992 for both the youth and senior teams, showcasing his versatility as a dual-sport athlete.[5] Johnson contributed to the development of cricket in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines by represent the West-Indies, a team in which players are selected from fifteen Caribbean nation-states and territories. His dual-sport achievements highlight his exceptional athleticism and dedication to representing his nation at the highest level in both football and cricket.

[edit]After retiring from professional sports, Elton Johnson began a career in accounting and pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting from Pierce College and graduating with magna cum laude honors. Furthermore, he is a member of the Delta Mu Delta honor society that recognizes and encourages academic excellence of students at qualifying colleges.[6] Currently, he works as a Senior Controller at Public Health Management Corporation in Philadelphia.
Beyond his own achievements, Johnson takes pride in his family's connection to soccer. His daughter is works as a manager for Gotham FC, the winners of the 2023 NWSL season. His son, a standout player at Cornell University, was recently drafted 47th overall by Charlotte FC in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft to play professional soccer in Major League Soccer, the highest level of soccer in the United States, continuing the family's professional sporting legacy.[7]
