Professor David Adebayo Oluwole
Academic, researcher, and practitioner in the field of Positive Psychology, Professor David Adebayo Oluwole is a well-known figure in the Nigerian academic community. His pioneering work in bringing Positive Psychology to Nigeria, as well as his contributions to the fields of counselling and human development, have earned him a lot of recognition. Professor Adebayo Oluwole is the third and the current Director of the Career Development and Counselling Centre at the University of Ibadan.
Humble Beginning and Education
In terms of his family history, Adebayo Oluwole was born on the 28th of April in 1975. His father, the Honorable Christopher Oluwole Fadeyi, was a member of the Ogeye clan and was originally from Ojagbo, Ibadan. When it comes to his mother, Elizabeth Folasade nee Ogundayo, she is from Igboho town, which is located in the Orelope Local Government area of Oyo State. His father's family village is Akinkemi, which is located in the Ona-Ara Local Government Area in Akanra, Ibadan. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Ibadan in 1991/92 to 1996/97, his Master of Arts degree in 1998/1999, and his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Counseling Psychology in 2007. He attended Baptist Primary School in Okegboho, Igboho, from 1977 to 1984, Ifelodun Grammar School, Igboho from 1984 to 1987, and Irepo Grammar School, Igboho from 1988 to 1989.
Career To pursue a career in computer repairs, desktop publishing, and data analysis, Adebayo Oluwole resigned from his position as a teacher. He had previously worked for the Oyo State Teaching Service Commission from the years 1998 to 2002. He was able to polish his talents in data analysis while working at the University of Ibadan Computing Centre under the tutelage of the late Mr Odewumi. Between the years 1998 and 2003, his two close friends, Mr. Adewale Olosunde and Dr Tunde Ayinla, provided him with training in desktop publishing and computer maintenance. In 2003, he began his doctoral studies in the Department of Guidance and Counselling, which was the department at the time. In the course of his participation in the program, he was awarded the University of Ibadan Postgraduate Scholarship, which led to his subsequent employment as an Assistant Lecturer. He worked his way up through the ranks, becoming a Lecturer II in 2008, a Lecturer I in 2010, a Senior Lecturer in 2013, a Reader in 2016, and ultimately a Professor in 2019. He has held a variety of positions, including those of Coordinator for Undergraduate (2006-2010), Special Adviser to NUESA (2011-2016), Master (2011-2014), Sub Dean Postgraduate for Faculty of Education (2016-2018) and PhD Programmes (2019-2022). Additionally, he has served as Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2023 Faculty of Education International Conference at the University of Ibadan. He served as a member of the Senate of the University of Ibadan from 2013 until 2016, and he has been a permanent member of the Senate from 2019 to the present day. Research and Practice Counselling, consulting, and positive psychology are the areas of research and practice that Professor Adebayo Oluwole focuses on. A happyologist and Chief Consultant of Positive Psychology & Educational Consult, Professor Adebayo Oluwole is a member of the professional community. Providing training, a counselling clinic, and a blog at www.positivepsychology.org.ng, the consortium acts as a clearinghouse for psychological resources on happiness and other meta-needs to ensure that individuals can engage in life to the fullest extent possible and generate a meaningful living. Professor Adebayo Oluwole has served as a consultant, resource person and facilitator of training for several private and public institutions in Nigeria such as Positive Psychology & Educational Consult, West African Examinations Council, Federal Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Abuja, Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU), NPMSC, Nigerian Ports Authority, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo and Ekiti States, Universal Basic Education Board, and Agro-Processing, Agricultural Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (a Federal Government of Nigeria FGN-World Bank Assisted programme), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Nigeria Girls’ Guide Association, LWR/CLEAR Project, among others. In the past, he has produced a large number of workshops and seminars on the subject of enhancing ability, human resourcefulness, and productivity. In addition, he is a conference producer. The pioneering work that he has done in Nigeria to address the issue of spiritual abuse from an empirical point of view is extremely laudable. His innovative application of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to enhance social competence in adolescents who had been involved in spiritual abuse in Ibadan, Nigeria, as far back as 2007, demonstrates his commitment to evidence-based practice and his dedication to assisting vulnerable populations. Up to this point, he has been responsible for supervising 85 undergraduate projects, 55 master's degree dissertations, and 15 doctoral theses. He has worked as an External Examiner for several different educational institutions. The contributions that Professor Oluwole has made to the area of Positive Psychology in Nigeria and beyond have been tremendous, and his expertise continues to be of assistance to individuals, organizations, and communities. The following are some crucial highlights: - Introduced Positive Psychology to Nigeria, thereby paving the way for its growth and development - Established the Positive Psychology Association of Nigeria, serving as its President - Published a large number of papers and books on Positive Psychology and related topics - Trained and mentored a large number of students and professionals in the field of Positive Psychology - Established a consultancy firm that focuses on Positive Psychology and educational services - Addressed spiritual abuse from an empirical perspective, utilizing dialectical behaviour therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy to support adolescents who have been experiencing spiritual abuse In addition to counselling and psychotherapy, Professor Oluwole is an expert in the following areas: - Human development and well-being; interventions in positive psychology; - Methods of research and statistical analysis - Management of associations and leadership - Consulting services in the fields of positive psychology, education, and organizational development - Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) - Advocacy for the empowerment of mothers and girls as children - Recovery and prevention measures for spiritual abuse. In addition to fostering human growth and advancing the field of positive psychology, his work continues to have a positive impact not just in Nigeria but also outside its borders.
In the form of chapters in books, edited volumes, refereed journal articles, and conference proceedings, he has submitted 79 scholarly works for publication. These works have received numerous citations on a national and worldwide scale. Academia.edu (1,262 followers, 118,859 total views), Scopus (4 publications, 27 citations, h-index=2), ResearchGate (Score=167.0, citations=93, h-index=4), and Google Scholar (Citations=527, h-index=9, i10-index=9) are the five websites that have indexed his publications. These scores are a quantification of the significant influence that my research outputs have had, as well as a demonstration of the widespread visibility that my papers have achieved. One of the founding members of the Positive Psychology Association of Nigeria, Professor Oluwole is also the current President of the organization. He is the Chief Editor of the Journal of Positive and Counselling Psychology as well as the Business Editor of the Nigerian Journal of Applied Psychology. Both of these positions are on his resume. He is married with four children.
