Article Review
[edit]I've been involved in jazz band since last year and it's a very unique style of music. The band i'm in right now is playing a piece called Oleo. I viewed the wiki page for this song, and it wasn't up to par with other wiki pages. Jazz is slowly becoming lost treasure due to modern culture's new take on music. To help form the map to jazz for other wikipedians, three aspects worth commenting on are: it's limited citations, an inadequate link, and lack of content.
Limited Citations
[edit]Throughout the page their are many facts around Oleo that don't have citations after. This leads makes me think if the info is credible or not. Also there many arrangements of Oleo, and the page briefly mentions it, but does not go into great detail. If I played a good arrangement of Oleo I would want to be noticed. Not to take away from the composer of Oleo (the page says its Sonny Rollins, but no citation) but other arrangements can bring new flavor to the song.
Inadequate Link
[edit]In the "References" section of the article, it has a link to unsatisfying source. It is just a listening sample of a version of Oleo. This doesn't make sense because it is called a reference on the page. It has no info, at least on the direct link, about info about Oleo. It's very misleading to click on this link and be left with no info about Oleo, it only has info about other musicians.
Lack of information
[edit]Other pages of famous song can be pretty extensive on Wikipedia, and this one is almost a joke. It at least was at the stage of being created, so at least it got that far. Other jazz pieces usually convey an emotion. On the page it says it's hard bop jazz, it could've talked about the history of why Oleo was created. Such as what led the composer to create the piece to show how Oleo came out to be what it was.
Summary
[edit]I would label this source unreliable and limited. The small amount of sources it has are not very convincingly credible. Also if sources came from more places the page could be more trustworthy. Although, the one citation it has leads to a website for all sorts of jazz history and pieces. This gives it some credibility because jazz standards [1] in general for information for a lot of jazz related topics. It has a decently formatted page which makes it somewhat believable.
P.S.- here is the page: Oleo (composition)
I am a junior in high school and am attending college classes through a program called running start. When I was younger, my Dad was in the Navy, so my family and I were always moving. I never got a stable relationship of friends when we were moving, so I was pretty introverted. Being introverted had its perks, school was pretty easy. I was usually one of the smartest kids in the class. Then, one year my Dad was gone for three years on deployment, with only a few two week visits in between. He was not the same person anymore, it was like I did not know him. So he left the Navy and ever since, we could finally settle in the same place. Since that I have been able to make stable friendships of people I will get know for more than a few months finally. This has allowed me to become a little more outgoing. The first thing that helped me be part of a group, like never before because I was a navy brat, was band. I have been in band since 6th grade and was the first group I was able to stick with, which I am still involved with. Band gave me friends that I have today to have some sort of social life. Not until this summer have I had a thirst to really dedicate to a sport. I tried football and let me just say, its fun to watch, not to play when you´re a skinny person. I been playing tennis since last year and it´s ok, but not really the most interesting to me. I worked at the Y which gave me access to the gym there. This led to my strong enjoyment of basketball. I am now practicing with a friend and using opportunities I have to play with others. I had only vaguely played ball before but not as much I have in the past three months. One of my main goals as of right now is to at the least make JV boys basketball.
I haven´t explored Wikipedia too much, but what has interested me is history that can be researched on the wiki. Such as the world wars, the golden age of Mongol rule, and technology during those times. I just like knowing these events because they didn´t happen when I was present or alive, but I can still know about it. I guess just things that I would´t have known at all without wiki of the internet for that matter is what interests me. Just being able to know something that happened hundreds of years ago and here I am reading it I think is amazing. I could see myself researching old technology, like stuff used in WWI. My reasoning is I like seeing how different technology is from then to now. Also seeing the different purposes for it.
