Liberty Latin America

Liberty Latin America[1] is a leading multinational telecommunications company with operations in Latin America and the Caribbean and its operations Center in Panama City, Panama. The company works with both residential and business customers, offering services that includes video, broadband internet, telephony, and mobile services.

Liberty Latin America operates in over 20 consumer markets and over 30 Business-to-business markets, with an extensive and unique subsea network, connecting approximately 40 markets.

Liberty Latin America had annual revenue of $4.9 billion in 2022, with operations in Puerto Rico, the Caribbean, and other parts of Latin America with more than 10,000 employees. It has 6.4 million RGUs (video, internet, and fixed-line telephony subscribers) and 7.5 million mobile subscribers.

History

In 2017, Liberty Latin America started trading on the NASDAQ Global Select Market and appointed its new CEO & President, Balan Nair.

In 2018, Liberty Latin America acquired the remaining 40% of Liberty Cablevision of Puerto Rico[2] and completed the acquisition of Cabletica, of Costa Rica[3].  

In 2019, Liberty Latin America sells Cable & Wireless Seychelles and announces the intention to acquire AT&T’s assets in Puerto Rico & The U.S. Virgin Islands. Also, it acquired a controlling stake in UTS and established its new Operations Center in Panama City, Panama.

In the same year, Dr. John C. Malone retires from Liberty Latin America Board and becomes Director Emeritus.

In 2020, Liberty Latin America completes the acquisition of AT&T operations in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and acquires Telefonica’s Operations in Costa Rica. It also acquires IT Outsource and expands C&W’s Business-to-Business operations in the Cayman Islands.  

In 2021, Liberty Latin America completes the acquisition of Broadband VI, a fixed wireless internet provider in the U.S. Virgin Islands and completes the acquisition of Telefonica S.A.’s wireless operations in Costa Rica.

In the same year, Liberty Latin America appointed its first Chief Customer Officer, Rocio Lorenzo.

In 2022, Cable & Wireless Panama, an operating company of Liberty Latin America, completed the acquisition of America Movil’s Claro Panama Operations[4]. This acquisition includes the migration of all Claro Panama’s mobile customers into Cable & Wireless’s +Movil client base. This LLA-America Movil Panama deal was announced in September 2021 for a value of US$200mn.  Liberty Latin America received all due clearance to complete the transaction in June 2022.  

In the same year, Liberty Latin America announced two major incorporations to its team, appointing Aamir Hussain as Chief Technology[5] and Product Officer and Roberta Jacobson to its Board of Directors[6].

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Since its foundation, Liberty Latin America has implemented many policies and practices regarding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), including parental leave, flexible working, gender-neutral practices, and employee assistance programs. These efforts have allowed the company to be closer to its goal of 50 percent gender-equitable representation across the business.

Liberty Latin America established its three ERG pillars around Gender, LGBTQIA+ and Race & Ethnicity and maintains inclusive practices through trainings, policies and event-based activities etc.

Policy against Gender-Based Violence

In 2021, Liberty Latin America joined the Global Community, launching a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) policy, becoming one of the first companies across Latin America and the Caribbean to adopt a policy of this topic to support employees experiencing GBV.[7]

Liberty Latin America's Gender-Based Policy provides their employees with resources, guidelines, and support through actions that can be activated depending on the urgency required.

In 2022, the company celebrated their first anniversary since the launch of their GBV, reminding their employees and their communities of their support. Liberty Latin America, in addition to their GBV Policy provides employees and communities with information and educational resources, to make sure everyone understand and get the awareness of the situation and the process to follow in each case, and how to protect everyone involved.

Partnership with Society of Women Coders

In 2022, Liberty Latin America partnered with The Society of Women Coders, a volunteer-run non-profit organization led by women working in Technology, and launched "Future Tech Stars"[8], an initiative aimed at empowering the next generation of women leaders in technology fields.

The initiative provided the opportunity for 800 young women across the Caribbean and Latin America to participate in a 20-week virtual course, both in Spanish and in English, focused on digital literacy, web development and coding skills.

On September of the same year, they celebrated the graduation of the participants in a virtual event hosted by The Society of Women Coders.

Responsibility: Environmental, Social and Governance

Liberty Latin America developed its ESG strategy based on three pillars: Sustainable Business Practices, Positive Social Impact, and Doing Business the Right Way.

In 2021, Liberty Latin America released its first ESG report for 2020[9] demonstrating its continuous support to people and communities, especially during the COVID 19 pandemic.  

In 2022, Liberty Latin America released its latest ESG report for 2021[10], leading the change for a more sustainable future for its employees, customers, communities, and stakeholders.  

Liberty Latin America and their Path to Net Zero

Liberty Latin America spent a significant part of their 2021 calculating direct and indirect CO2 emissions, resulting from activities across their business. This establishes a baseline for them to benchmark their energy usage and set targets to reduce emissions.  

With the support of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Standard established by the World Resources Institute and World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Liberty Latin America collected energy consumption data and estimated their material Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions for 2021. These emissions results primarily from the usage of grid electricity and the fuels consumed by their vehicle fleets and generators.

Based on the data they collected and published in their ESG report for 2021[11], their 2021 Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions amounted to 233,454 Metric Tons CO2eq.
