Media corruption

[edit]

The widespread problem of media corruption frequently goes unrecognized in the digital age in which media outlets dominate as the main information source. This troubling reality undermines the integrity of journalism, distorting truths and leading to harmful outcomes. The complete truth is clouded by sensationalism, prejudice, and manipulation, which also contributes to societal divisions and spreads falsehoods. This problem has caused many traumatizing outcomes that society is blinded to due to journalism being jeopardized and affecting the full truth of the information.

Introduction to media corruption:
[edit]

Media corruption has many more effects than just catchy headlines and soundbites. Biased or inaccurate reporting can have disastrous effects, including escalating social and political tensions and affecting public debate and societal attitudes. However, it is important to consider the effect it has on the people it includes. This has been mostly shown in the Middle East, with its catastrophic political events and the multiple ongoing wars.

Media corruption in the Middle East:
[edit]

Many Middle Eastern countries are facing the same issues of controlling information to media manipulation. The Palestine-Israel war, The Syrian Civil War, and even the Ramadan War in Egypt all suffered from media corruption. Many Middle Eastern regimes impose strict controls on media outlets, suppressing oppositional voices and managing information flow through censorship laws and regulations. State-owned media frequently act as propaganda vehicles, spreading skewed stories that support the agendas of people in positions of authority. An example of this would be Russia finding a way to influence the Middle East by creating fake news sites. Another way would be by hacking news outlets and publishing specific information for their benefit using it to their advantage.[1]

Media corruption in the Syrian Civil War:
[edit]

One of the more overlooked wars that have fallen victim to media corruption is the Syrian Civil War. Syria's economy has become noticeably unproductive due to several factors including inflation, restricted foreign investment, outdated educational institutions, land-grabbing corruption, and embezzlement in businesses. [2]Due to this, the people of Syria have been suffering through sanctions from food brands to pharmaceuticals which has affected the economy drastically. This forced them to create brands of their own. However, as the years went on, they faced another challenge of inflation and a decrease in exchange rates. Pre-war, the Syrian pound was valued at 50 SYP per US dollar. Nowadays, a single US dollar is valued at 4,250 SYP which has made it impossible for families to create a living.[3] This catastrophic news is not out for the public to see and acknowledge the suffering that these people have been through because of the lack of media outlets in the country and the restriction of information.
