The Principality of San Bernardino is an unrecognized micronation established in 2013 by Gianni Rolando, an Italian surveyor.[1] The Principality claims an island located between the western coast of Yemen and Eritrea as its territory.

History

[edit]

The claimed territory is an island that emerged from a submarine volcanic eruption in the Red Sea in December 2011.[2] that occurred on December 19, 2011[3][4] The new island formed between Haycock Island and Rugged Island and is part of the Jebel Zubair archipelago about 50 km west of the Yemeni city of Salif.

Gianni Rolando established the Principality of San Bernardino in 2013, claiming the newly formed island as its territory. He declared the micronation's independence on September 30, 2013 in a document notarized in San Marino.

The Principality claims to have acquired sovereignty, but remains unrecognized by other nations and organizations. Its territorial claim is based on recognition by another micronation, the Multioceanic Archipelago of United Micronations (AMOMU), in 2012.
