Interaction, Experience & Engagement

Currently at Hull University I would like to work in TV Advertising when I have finished University. Currently I am making a number of different websites for different lectures. I & two other members of the Hull University are working on a Digital video for NSS (National Student Survey) which will be placed on their website when we have finished. I am planning to make edits related to World War 1 on Wikipedia, mainly the HMS Lynx (1913) . Please take a moment to view this page and also leave me a message on my talk page if you have any questions. Thank you and enjoy.

Raid on Scarborough, Hartlepool and Whitby & HMS Lynx (1913) is the subject myself, User:Eeeeekaj and User:02selleg will be looking at.

Reflective HMS Lynx (1913) [edit]

Content

  • The page I have made is all about the battle ship from World War one called ‘HMS LYNX (1913). All of the information I have written on the page has all been referenced and checked that all of the information is correct and verified.
  • HMS LYNX (1913) was made in 1912, by builders of the British royal navy in London and Glasgow England & iron shipping Co. The ship HMS Lynx, Yard number 364 was 266 feet in length, 27 feet in breadth and 9 feet in depth. The HMS Lynx is best known for its role in Scarborough Bombardment (in 1914), where it was hit several times, the ship wasn’t too badly damaged however, and no lives were lost, just the one man who was badly wounded. All this information is what I have placed on my Wikipedia page all about the ship. This is just a rough outline on the ship. There is more information about the ship on the page.
  • The contents of my page I have placed there for a reason. I did a lot of research but only decided to place the main points of the HMS LYNX (1913) because I felt like all the other information wasn’t needed or wasn’t trust wealthy information.

Understanding

  • The main things I have learnt on Wikipedia would be that you need to take time in looking up information, which can be used. When I first started using Wikipedia I was just placing all known information on the site, which was getting taken down straight away. By looking into different information it was then easier to pick bits, which I could use, which wouldn’t get taken down because of the unknown source where it was from.
  • Trial and error was also a big part of the task, for example I wanted to put a small informational box about the ship on my Wikipedia page but couldn’t understand why when I was taking words from the table, it wouldn’t show up on the preview page. After looking into the table, I came across that there were different tables for different kind of information. This helped me to understand why it would only let me, Name the ship, height and width of the ship, and simpler information.
  • Using the talk page came in handy as well because when we where working in the groups we kept duplicating work which we then had to delete. By talking on the take page we then knew what had to be done and what was already done. Overall this was very handy.

Engagement

  • Presenting myself on my talk page was a very important thing at the start, I firstly started with the main things about myself, then over the weeks I then chose to let people know more about myself and why I did things how I did. Overall I am happy with how we used the talk pages as a group.
  • We didn’t use all of the talk pages, just one or two as it started to get very tricky to contact each other. After seeing that it was getting hard to contact one another we decided to just use one user talk page as all the information we needed was on there.
  • The engagement on Wikipedia was very important as we where shown by other Wikipedians on what we where aloud to place on the site. Harry and Hannah where very helpful on showing me the ins and outs of Wikipedia. Hannah could see that I wasn’t the best on Wikipedia and she took time to show me how the site worked. Also looking in other peoples sandbox’s was helpful as I could see if other people had information I needed for my chosen topic. After seeing if they had what I need I would then ask then other the talk pages if I could use the information they had on Wikipedia in my own work.
  • Harry has been a Wikipedians for over five years and blogged thousands of articles on Wikipedia. He showed me a lot on the site and helped me to place things in the correct place on the site. I am very happy and understand why Wikipedia is how it is and respect that the information on the site is all correct information. It helps that other Wikipedians can go onto your page and alter things to make then correct or sound better. Overall I am happy to let other people have their own view on my page.
