Aurora Hills Middle School is a middle school that serves students in grades 6-8 located in Aurora, Colorado, as part of the Aurora Public Schools. The school is the home of the Mustangs.

As of the 2004-05 school year, the middle school had 408 students in 6th grade, 390 students in 7th grade and 348 students in 8th grade. The student body is 32.3% Hispanic, 32.3% White, 28.9% Black, 5.7% Asian and .9% American Indian. With 1,146 students and 59.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), the school had a student-teacher ratio of 19.4.[1]

Curriculum

The school offers the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, a rigorous international education designed to teach students how to learn and evaluate information on a a critical basis, that has been in place at the school since February 2003.[2] Of teh more than 95,000 elementary schools nationwide, Aurora Hills is one of only 185 schools nationwide that offer the Middle Years Programme.[3][4] The IB program at Aurora covers eight areas: Language A (English), Language B (a modern foreign language), Humanities, Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Education and Technology. Incoming students and current 6th and 7th graders may apply for admission to this selective program.[5]

Aurora Hills offers gifted and talented students the opportunity to participate in the Summit Academy, which is available to highly motivated students who have for AGATE (gifted and talented) services.[6]

Awards and recognition

In 2001, science teacher at Aurora Hills Middle School was recognized by the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship Program, which included a grant of nearly $40,000 to be used for the purchase of science and technology equipment.[7][8]

Athletics

Sports programs offered at Aurora Hills Middle School include Basketball (Boys and Girls), Soccer, Swimming (Girls), Track (Boys and Girls), Volleyball (Girls) and Wrestling. Team participation is limited to students in 7th and 8th grade.[6]
