Venancio Rius

Venancio Rius (Moncofa, Castellón, born 4 January, 1965) is a clarinet teacher and soloist with a prestigious carrer recognised internationally.

Studies

Born into a family with deep musical traditions, he started his musical studies with his grandfather, the master Eugenio Martí, at the age of 5. He took his first clarinet classes from Vicent Palau. After that, he continued his studies as a pupil of Idilio Gimeno.

He studied with Juan Vercher in the Conservatorio Superior de Música of Valencia. Later he studied in the University of Valencia and with his most important teacher, the internationally recognised teacher Yehuda Gilad, who has been his best model both in a pedagogical and instrumental way. Venancio studied under this teacher in and the University of Southern California. In USC he also took master classes from Mitchel Lurie and Michelle Zukovsky .

He attended master classes and advanced classes in Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Karlsruhe, Madrid, Benidorm and Valencia. He took part in festivals such as the Aspen Music Festival and School (Colorado-United States) and Rome Summer Festival (Rome-Italy).

He attended conducting classes with Daniel Lewis in California, choir conducting with Eduardo Cifre in Valencia and he's also gone to master classes with Murry Sidlin, David Hoose, Jorge Mester and in the Corwin Seminars with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Franz Welser-Möst.

Teacher

He has been an Associate Professor of the University of Southern California (as the substitute of Yehuda Gilad during his sabbatical year in 2006), teacher of the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Valencia, Conservatorio Superior de Música de Murcia, and also teacher in the Professional Conservatory of Vall de Uxó, Lliria and Ibiza.

He was a teacher at the VII Encuentro Internacional de Clarinete de Lisboa (seventh international clarinet encounter in Lisbon), at the international courses of Clarinet in Benidorm as Yehuda Gilad's assistant and in the 2007 China International Clarinet Music Festival.

He has given master classes in Argentina, Canada, China, the United States, Europe, Mongolia and Oman, including the following institutions: University of Los Angeles, University of New York, St Thomas University in Fredericton (Canada), the National Conservatory of Lisbon, the National Conservatory of Buenos Aires, the National University of Jujuy, the Instituto Superior de Arte of Jujuy, Beijing Central Conservatory, China Conservatory, Shenzhen Arts School, China Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Ulan Bator Opera House, State College of Music and Dance of Mongolia, Conservatorio "José Iturbi" of Valencia, Conservatorio Superior de Música of A Coruña, Conservatorio Profesional de Música of Ferrol, Conservatorio Profesional de Música "Ramón Garay" of Jaén, the American & British Academy and The Colburn School of Los Angeles among others.

In Spain, he has taught clarinet refinement courses in Valencia, Castellón, Alicante, A Coruña, Burgos, Ciudad Real, Ibiza, La Vall D'Uixó, Almazora, Onil, Moncada, Puerto de Valencia, Altura, San Juan de Moró, Moncofa, Sagunto, Bandeira and Reus among others.

He has been a chamber music teacher at the I, II, III, IV and V Beyond the Music: International Chamber Music Festival & Master Classes 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. During the 2010 edition of this festival, which had Richard Aznar and Sayá Sangidorj in charge of the artistic direction, he gave a lecture at the Centro de Ciencias de Benasque Pedro Pascual titled “Music: It is a whole Science, a whole Art”.

His teachings have produced many first prize winners in important national and international competitions, including the Young Concert Artist International Competition, the Pasadena Instrumental Competition, the Art Jove competition from the Balearic islands, the Certamen Nacional de Interpretación "Intercentros Melómano", the American Youth Symphony Auditions, the Philadelphia Astral Artistic Services, the Lincoln Center Chamber Music Society Avery Fisher Career Grant.

He has been President of the jury at The J.Chuluun 10th International Competition of Young Musicians in Ulan Bator (Mongolia), as well as a member of the jury at the Shanghai Spring International Music Competition and the 2012 Guangzhou International Orchestral Art Festival Competition.

He is the teacher of the "Encuentros con Venancio Rius” organized by the AGAC (Asociación Galega para el Estudio y Desarrollo del Clarinete). They are held once a month since 2010 in different conservatories and auditoriums in Galicia, Valencia and Portugal, including cities such as Santiago de Compostela, Valga, Ortigueira, As Pontes, Lugo, Villagarcia de Arousa, Monforte de Lemos, Chantada, Guntin, Narón, Ferrol, Sada, Moncofa and Oporto.

He has given master classes in Argentina, including the National Conservatory of Music in Buenos Aires, the Dirección General de Enseñanza Artística, Neuquén’s Music School, The Cultural Center in Jujuy and the National University of Jujuy, and he was a clarinet teacher in the I Encuentro de Clases Magistrales held by the Menéndez Pelayo International University in Minglanilla (Cuenca).

Currently, he teaches at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de Castilla-La Mancha, the CARM (Centro de Alto Rendimiento Musical), the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts of the Alfonso X El Sabio University and at Forum Musikae - International Music Academy.

Soloist

Venancio Rius has performed in Germany, Argentina, Austria, Canada, China, Korea, Spain, United States, Finland, France, Holland, England, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, Mongolia, Oman, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland.

He has premiered works by Aaron Copland (chamber version of the opera “The Tender Land”), Martin Kutnowski (works dedicated to him such as: “Momentum” solo clarinet, premiered in New York in 1996, "Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra", which was performed for the first time on the 5^th March 2010, and the Fantasy for Clarinet and Piano, (which was performed for the first time on the 5^th March 2010 at CSMCLM Auditorium), Frederick Leseman, José Alamà, Adolfo Villalonga (Emotional Fluctuations for Clarinet, which was dedicated to himself and was performed for the first time in 2001 in Ibiza) and Juan Pons. His collaborations with the composer and pianist Manuel García-Morante are also significant. García-Morante dedicated his Prelude e Toccata and his Notturno, Serenata e Finale for Clarinet and Piano to Venancio Rius. These works were performed for the first time at a Recital in the Sultunate of Oman with the composer at the piano, sponsored by the Spanish Embassy.

He has played with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, USC Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie der Nationen, Aspen Festival Orchestra, the City of Ibiza Symphonic Orchestra, Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra, London Schubert Chamber Orchestra, China Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra, Buenos Aires Amadeus Orchestra, Villareal Supramúsica Orchestra and Castellón Youth Symphonic Orchestra, among others.

He collaborated in different recordings at the Steven Spielberg Music Scoring Stage, USC Film Music Department and with the SC Contemporary Music Ensemble. He also played at the premiere gala of the film "The English Patient".

He was invited to the 2008 Artist Tour by Buffet Crampon Beijing, touring in China as a conductor and soloist, giving master classes and as a member of the jury of the Shanghai Spring International Music Competition.

In 2009, he formed the RIUS-ABAD DUO with pianist María Abad, giving pedagogical recitals and concerts in Spain and Canada.

In 2012, he gave concert tours in China, Mongolia and Switzerland, performing at the Beijing Haidian Theater and Shenzhen Grand Theatre in China, at the KKL Lucern Auditorium in Switzerland, and with the China Dunshan Symphonic Wind Orchestra under the direction of Adrian Schneider. He also gave a recital at the Auditorium of the State College of Music and Dance of Mongolia.

He has organized a series of Concert-Conferences called: "Balance between Abstract Form and Narration: Discovering Secret Stories in Chamber Music", with the collaboration of composer Dr. Martín Kutnowski as a speaker. The Quintets for Clarinet and Strings by Martín Kutnowski (There is a Tower at the Sea) and Carl Maria von Weber were played. Enrique Palomares (Violin), Albert Skuratov (Violin), Santiago Cantó (Viola) y David Barona (Cello) collaborated playing in the cycle "The Arts in Parallel" at the Palau de la Música in Valencia.

He has given concert tours with orchestra and recitals in Argentina, including several auditoriums such as the Auditorium of the Faculty of Law in Buenos Aires, the Museum of Hispano-American Art in Buenos Aires, the Mire de Jujuy Theatre, Comodoro Rivadavia Cultural Center and The National Museum of Fine Arts of Neuquén, among others.

At Christmas in 2014-2015, he played the Jean Francaix Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra with the Castelló Youth Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Pablo Marqués, in concert halls like the Auditorium of Castelló, the Joaquín Rodrigo Auditorium in Sagunt and the Palau de la Música in Valencia.

Orchestra conductor

He has received advice and collaborated with teachers and directors such as David Zinman, Yehuda Gilad, James Conlon, Eiji Oue, Eduard Cifre, Lawrence Foster, Mitchell Lurie, Itzhak Perlman, Carl St. Clair, José María Cervera Collado, Larry Livingston and Ole Kristian Ruud, among others.

In 2007 and 2008 he was Conductor and Artistic advisor for the Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra. He was invited to conduct the New Year Concert 2008 for the Sultan Qaboos Bin Said and the "An Evening of Spanish Music" concert, with the collaboration of the Spanish embassy in Muscat. This program dedicated to Spanish music included the Concerto de Aranjuez of Joaquín Rodrigo with the guitarist Àlex Garrobé, the Danzas Fantásticas of Joaquín Turina and Capriccion Espagnol of Rimsky-Korsakov.

He has conducted concerts in the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, Peking University, the University of Southern California, the PLA China Auditorium, the China Conservatory of Music, The Palace Bait Al-Barakah Muscat and he has played the Weber, Mozart and Rossini Concertos for Clarinet and Orchestra as soloist-director.

Awards and honors

He has received the recognition of competitions and institutions including USC Los Ángeles Concerto Competition, Gordon & Lillian Hardy Award, Bruce Zalkind Memorial Prize, Buffet Crampon North American Clarinet Competition; INAEM (The National Stage Arts and Music Institute), created by the Spanish Ministry of Culture; the Spanish Embassy in Muscat, the Cervantes Institute in Lisbon, the Culture Department of the Generalitat Valenciana, the Honor Award of the Advanced Music Conservatory of Valencia and the 2007 China Clarinet International Festival award for the most distinguished professor.

He has been honored with the "Premio Fortea de las Artes 2012" for a career of consolidated international prestige, granted by the IDM (Instituto para el Desarrollo Musical).
