Frederick Charles Jorgenson (27 May 1923 – 8 June 2016) was a Canadian teacher and academic who served as the 2nd principal, and later 1st president, of the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute (now Toronto Metropolitan University).

Early life and education[edit]

Jorgenson was born on 27 May 1923, in the hamlet of Cereal, Alberta, the second child to Alfred and Vera Jorgenson.

After completing correspondence and self-study courses at the University of Saskatchewan and London School of Economics, he was granted the degree of Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta.

Career[edit]

In 1946, Jorgenson accepted a teaching position at Oyen Public School in Oyen, Alberta. The following year, he accepted another teaching position at the Olds School of Agriculture and Home Economics (now Olds College). He taught at Olds College for 10 years, the last 5 of which he was dean of men students.

In 1956, Jorgenson accepted a position at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, where he was an instructor. He quickly rose the ranks of SAIT, becoming the principal in 1962.

On 1 July 1966, Jorgenson became the 2nd principal of the Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, succeeding Howard Hillen Kerr, the institute's founder.
