Introduction

Ajit Umrani is a renowned international badminton player and coach, who has represented both India and the United States at various prestigious events. He achieved notable success as a silver medalist in the Men's Doubles 40+ category at the 2021 World Senior Badminton Championship held in Huelva, Spain.

Over the course of his career, Ajit has earned recognition as one of the top badminton players in the USA, with several national titles to his name.

Playing Career

Ajit Umrani has an extensive career in competitive badminton. He represented the United States between 2016-2018 and again in 2023, while also representing India in 2021. He was ranked No. 1 in Men's Doubles in the United States in 2016 and No. 2 in Men's Singles in 2010. He also achieved a No. 5 ranking in Mixed Doubles in 2016. Over his career, he has won over 25 medals in national level tournaments across a range of events, including Men's Singles, Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, from 2007 to 2018.

Additionally, Ajit has participated in European interclub championships, representing teams in Hungary and Bulgaria between 2016 and 2024, further enhancing his international experience.

He was a former champion in Maharashtra, India, winning Junior titles in both Singles and Doubles from 1994 to 1997, and securing the Pune District Junior and Men’s Singles titles between 1995 and 2000. Coaching Career

As a coach, Ajit Umrani has contributed to the development of badminton across multiple continents. He has high-performance coaching experience in the United States, Bulgaria, and India, and has mentored athletes at various levels.

He served as the US Junior National Team Coach at the Pan Am Junior Badminton Championships in 2011 and has coached U-15, U-17, and U-19 Boys and Girls.

His students have gone on to win Junior National Championships in Bulgaria from 2022 to 2024. He is a USA Badminton Certified Level 2 Coach (2010-11) and holds USA Safe Sports Accreditation (2010, 2023). His experience includes conducting coaching clinics at the US Olympic Training Center.

Ajit Umrani has also served as the Director of Coach Development for USA Badminton (East Zone) from 2014 to 2015 where he helped with training and assessment of aspiring Badminton coaches.

Recognition In 2024, Ajit Umrani was honoured with the prestigious ‘Poona Honor Award’ by the Poona District Maharashtra Badminton Association (PDMBA) in recognition of his contributions to the sport.
