This is an essay. It contains the advice or opinions of one or more Wikipedia contributors. This page is not an encyclopedia article, nor is it one of Wikipedia's policies or guidelines, as it has not been thoroughly vetted by the community. Some essays represent widespread norms; others only represent minority viewpoints. |
This page in a nutshell: Use Discord servers for Wikimedians responsibily or risk getting banned for annoyance and suspicion. People inside the Discord servers are to socialize. |
Since I was banned (in communist sense, purged) from the EN Discord server for simply being an annoyance to everyone inside, I should tell you that as per WP:CHOICE, participation of off-wiki communities for a bunch of Wikipedians is not compulsory, you can leave the servers anytime if you feel uncomfortable on-wiki. I also need to know that I already have autism since birth.
Remember, failure is not the end, it is an opportunity to come back in the future and resume building the encyclopedia. Just learn from my mistakes I committed. Other Wikipedians are not your enemies, especially some of those who are in different Discord servers, you should cooperate and resolve disputes. Hostility is contrary to building the encyclopedia.
The general advice for people joining a Wikimedia discord server is to:
- Participate in a good mood
- Do not derail the purpose of the channels
- Off-topic channels serve as a "stay informed" channel, do not use them as a forum for heated debate
- If you're not called while participating in a voice channel, just mute
- If you feel uncomfortable, just leave without informing everyone
Pro tip
[edit]Most people, including the server mods don't really care about other people bringing annoyance inside. Server bans are not punitive. In the future, there will be rigorous vetting on people who will join the Discord server as a safety measure, which means a full WikiAuthBot verification and then a manual verification by server mods before accessing all channels.
