James Stein (30 November 1780 - 1 July 1865) was a Scottish painter and cloth merchant.[1][2]

His father was Andrew Stein (15 November 1741 - c. 1828) from Airth. He became known as Andrew Stein of Hattonburn, Kinross-shire.

His mother was Margaret Dudgeon (c. 1749 - c. 1819) from East Lothian. Andrew and Margaret married on 5 August 1774 in Clackmanannan.

James Stein was born on 30 November 1780 in Clackmannan, the couple's fourth son.[5][6] He was baptised there on 12 December that year.

He married Janet Mackenzie (born c. 1787) from England. They married in Penicuik on 4 April 1806.[7]

One of his elder brothers was the artist Robert Stein (26 February 1778 - 15 March 1844).

He died on 1 July 1865 at his home 2 Allan Park in Stirling.[8]
