John Sydney Steel (30 June 1863 - 29 June 1932) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

His father was John Steel (born c. 1816), a merchant from Stirling who became a Justice of the Peace.

His mother was Mary Prince (born c. 1834) from London. John and Mary married in 1853 in Newington, London.

John Sydney Steel was born on 30 June 1863 in Perth.[7]

He married Alma Jean Clark (c. 1877 - 27 February 1973), the youngest daughter of Alistair MacIntosh Clark of Blair Atholl, Timuka, New Zealand. Alistair MacIntosh Clark was the son of Captain Clark of Dalnavert, Badenoch, Inverness-shire. John and Alma married on 27 June 1900 in Edinburgh.[8][9]

Death

He died on 29 June 1932 in Strathyre in the parish of Balquhidder, Perthshire.[11] His home was then Blackpark, near Perth.

He is buried in Moneydie Parish Churchyard in Perth.[12]

He left an estate worth £1921.[13]
