James Smyth (c. 1875 - 27 November 1959) was a Scottish painter.[1][2]

His father was William Smyth (c. 1847 - 15 January 1917), a joiner from Scotland.

His mother was Janet Graham Liddle (born c. 1847) from Scotland. William and Janet married in Sunderland, England on 11 September 1872 in Monkwearmouth, Sunderland.

James Smyth was born in Sunderland c. 1875.

He married Margaret Murdoch Crocket, the only daughter of the schoolmaster William Crocket of Edinburgh and Robertina Reid. They married at the Caledonian Station Hotel in Edinburgh on 19 July 1921. They were married by the bride's uncle, the Rev. J. Crocket of the Yester U. F. Church.[5]

His brother was the sculptor Edwin Smyth (4 April 1885 - 7 March 1953).[6]
