William Ryle Smith (26 March 1862 - 6 April 1945) is a Scottish painter.[1][2]
Life
[edit]His father was George Smith (c. 1831 - 27 May 1870), a horse hirer from Kirriemuir.
His mother was Mary Dunn (c. 1831 - 2 April 1889), from England. She was the daughter of John Dunn, a gamekeeper, and Jane Ryle. George and Mary married on 14 December 1856 in Mary's home at Glenhead, Lintrathen, to the west of Kirriemuir.
William Ryle Smith was born on 26 March 1862 at Bank Street in Kirriemuir.
He married Helen Forbes (1862 - 1918) from Macduff in Banffshire. They married on 27 July 1892 in 31 Duff Street, Macduff.
After Helen died, he remarried Mary Kevan Nixon. They married in 1926 in Dundee.
He was the uncle of the artist William George Gillies and a lifelong friend of J. M. Barrie.
