John William Small was born in Dundee c. 1851.
Bothe his parents died young and his uncle George and wife Catherine took over the household at 11 Hunter Street.[8] John was brought up by his grandmother Jean McIntosh at Blackness Road.[9] Also notable at 11 Hunter Street, was the Haggart family and the Edinburgh cabinetmaker James Haggart that married into their household.[10] Haggart may well have apprenticed John.
By 1870 John had made his way to Edinburgh and was studying as a draughtsman and architect in various addresses around the city.
He married Margaret Isabella Myles (born c. 1856), the daughter of the Dundee shipowner Richard Myles. They married at 1 Ford's Lane in Dundee on 4 September 1878.[11]

As a furniture maker he ended up in court in 1899 after he was employed by Inverness furniture makers Noble and Dreghorn and then quit.[13]
He wrote a book on Scottish Woodwork[14] and a book on Old Stirling in 1897.[15]
