Robert Smellie (15 November 1837 - 24 August 1920) was a Scottish painter.[1]
Life
[edit]His father was John Smellie (20 April 1808 - 14 May 1861) from Blackburn in West Lothian.
His mother was Elizabeth Greenfield (15 December 1809 - 8 September 1859) from Edinburgh. John and Elizabeth married on 14 March 1831 in Edinburgh.
Robert Smellie was born on 15 November 1837 in Edinburgh.[2]
He married Jane Joanna Taylor (c. 1845 - c. 1892) from Edinburgh. They married on 21 February 1865 in Edinburgh.
After Jane died, Robert remarried. He married the artist Sophia Margaret Paton (c. 1840 - 17 March 1895) from Selkirk.[3] They married on 19 April 1892 in Selkirk.
He married again after Sophia died. He married Jeanie Hogg (1847 - 23 February 1922). They married on 4 June 1908 in Edinburgh.

[edit]He died on 24 August 1920 at Thistle Cottage in Stow in the Scottish Borders.[4] He was buried in Stow Cemetery on 27 August 1920.
