Sophia Margaret Paton (c. 1840 - 17 March 1895) was a Scottish painter.[1]

Life

Her father was Robert Paton (c. 1795 - 25 January 1884), a writer to the signet from Lasswade, Midlothian.

Her mother was Isabella Phipps (12 September 1799 - 17 October 1897) from St. Pancreas, London, England. Robert and Isabella married in Southwark, London on 26 September 1832.

Sophia Margaret Paton was born c. 1840 in Selkirk.[2]

She married the artist William Sinclair (c. 1840 - 4 July 1879) from Edinburgh. They married on 16 March 1868 in Edinburgh.[3]

The couple's daughter Sophia Sinclair did not survive infancy.

After William died, Sophie remarried. She married the artist Robert Smellie (15 November 1837 - 1920) from Edinburgh.[4] They married on 19 April 1892 in Selkirk.

Death

She died on 17 March 1895 at 13 Union Street in Edinburgh. Her estate was valued at £239, 10 shillings and 10 pence.[5]

He was buried on 20 March 1895 in Dalry cemetery.[6]
