Robert Thornton Shiells (14 February 1833 - 24 May 1902) was a Scottish painter and architect.[1][2]

His father was William Shiells (30 March 1799 - 12 March 1847), a brewer from Haddington, East Lothian.

His mother was Eliza Cooper (c. 1800 - 1837). William and Eliza married on 25 April 1825 in Yester in East Lothian.

Robert Thornton Shiells was born on 14 February 1833 in Haddington.[7][8]

He married Flora Dunlop Tait (c. 1842 - 10 December 1922) from Edinburgh.[9] They married on 18 March 1864 at 9 Hope Park Terrace in Edinburgh.[10]

He was sequestrated in 1894.[11]

Their son was the artist William Thornton Shiells (12 January 1875 - 17 July 1940).[12]

Death

He died on 24 May 1902 at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh.[14] He is buried at the Grange cemetery in Edinburgh.[15]
