History

[edit]

Formation

[edit]

On September 24, 2007, Cody Rhodes began a respect feud with Hardcore Holly and lost three consecutive matches to him.[3][4][5] He eventually earned Holly's respect, impressing him during their matches with his persistence and several near-falls, and the two formed a tag team.[6][7] They earned a shot at the World Tag Team titles by defeating Paul London and Brian Kendrick and The Highlanders in a WWE.com exclusive match after an Alabama Slam.[8] They fought against the Tag Champs Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch at Survivor Series 2007, in what was be Cody Rhodes first on-screen title shot, and first pay-per-view match, but were unsuccessful.[9]

On the November 19, 2007 episode of Raw, Rhodes faced Hardcore Holly for a fourth time in an attempt to finally defeat his tenured senior.[10] Rhodes finally managed to defeat Hardcore Holly in this match, however, immediately following the pinfall, Randy Orton incapacitated both Rhodes and Holly with the RKO.[10]

On December 10, 2007, on the Raw 15th Anniversary special episode, Rhodes along with Hardcore Holly defeated Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch for the World Tag Team Championship, marking Rhodes' first championship in WWE.[11][12] The following week, Rhodes and Holly retained their titles, in their first title defense, against Cade and Murdoch.[13] They have also successfully defended the championships against the teams of Santino Marella and Carlito and Paul London and Brian Kendrick.

On May 26, 2008 edition of Raw Ted DiBiase (Theodore DiBiase Jr) cut a promo about his intent to become a champion like his father, Ted DiBiase, challenging then World Tag Team Champions, Cody Rhodes (Cody Runnels) and Hardcore Holly (Bob Holly) to a match for the Tag Team titles at Night of Champions (2008). But would not reveal his partner.[14]. In weeks leading up to Night of Champions Ted Dibiase would watch Cody Rhodes and Hardcore Holly lose non title matches and keep saying that he will reveal his partner at Night of Champions. At Night of Champions DiBiase came to the ring unaccompanied unaccompanied and said his partner would be there. But the bell rang and there was no partner making it a two on one handicap match. DiBiase demanded that he face Holly first and as DiBiase approached Holly, Holly was attacked by his tag team partner Rhodes revealing that he was DiBiase's tag team partner. Turning Rhodes heel in the process. Holly was decimated by the Dibiase and Rhodes and the numbers game proved too much as DiBiase and Rhodes became the new World Tag Team Champions.[15]

World Tag Team Champions

[edit]

On July 28, 2008 edition of Raw Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase had their first successful title defence after defeating the Raw Commentators Michael Cole (Michael Coulthard) and Jerry Lawler. Lawler and Cole lost after Cole inadvertently tagged himself in, and was quickly pinned by Rhodes after a lariat. They were originally supposed to face Jim Duggan (James Duggan) and Jerry Lawler until General Manager Mike Adamle changed it. [16] After holding the titles for just over a month they dropped them to John Cena and Batista (Dave Bautista) on the August 4 edition of Raw. After a Batista Bomb to DiBiase.[17] However the following week on Raw DiBiase and Rhodes invoked their rematch cause and regained the tag team titles. After DiBiase executed a Roll up (pin) on John Cena after Batista inadvertently distracted him. [18] On the August 18 episode of Raw, While DiBiase and Rhodes were in a handicap match against John Cena Cryme Tyme (Shad Gaspard and JTG [Jayson Paul] stole the World Tag Team Championship belts.[19] The following week, after DiBiase and Rhodes defeated Jim Duggan and Jerry Lawler in a tag team match Cryme Tyme challenged them to a World Tag Team Championship match at Unforgiven.[20][21] At Unforgiven Dibiase and Rhodes defeated Cryme Tyme after a roll up. After the match the debuting Manu (Afa Anoa'i, Jr.) attacked Cryme Tyme.[22] They have formed some what of an alliance teaming together in a six man tag team match on 8th September edition of Raw.[23] On 3rd October edition of Smackdown along with Manu they would make their Smackdown debut in a 6-man tag match against WWE Tag Team Champions Primo (Eddie Colon) and Carlito (Carly Colon) and CM Punk (CM Punk) in a losing effort.[24] They are currently in a feud with CM Punk and Kofi Kingston (Kofi Sarkodie-Mensah) which would start On September 22, edition of Raw when CM Punk defeated Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase and Kofi Kingston joined the fray.[25] And the following week Dibiase, Rhodes, Manu and Kane (Glen Jacobs defeated Rey Mysterio (Oscar Gutierrez), Evan Bourne (Matthew Korland), Kofi Kingston and CM Punk in a 8-man tag team match.[26] Dibiase and Rhodes vs Kofi Kingston and CM Punk for the World Tag Team Championship was one of the three options for the tag team match at Cyber Sunday (2008)[27] however the fans chose John Morrison and the Miz (John Hennigan and Mike Mizarin) vs Cryme Tyme.[27]

Loss of World Tag Team Championships and Disbansion

[edit]

Despite not being voted the previous night at Cyber Sunday, on the 27th October edition of Raw Kofi Kingston and CM Punk would defeat Cody Rhodes and Ted Dibiase for the World Tag Team Championships.[28]

DiBiase was then written out of WWE storylines, by Randy Orton attacking him, so he could film the direct to DVD movie, The Marine 2. Thus disbanding the team temporarily.[29] [30]

Rhodes's Alliance with Orton

[edit]

At Survivor Series, Rhodes, along with Orton, was a sole survivor, for Orton's team, in the Elimination match.[31] Rhodes and Manu accepted Orton's offer for an alliance in the following weeks, and the trio dubbed themselves "The Legacy"; debuting in a 2 on 3 handicap match against Batista and Triple H.[32][33] Orton began scheduling tests for The Legacy members, so they could prove themselves, and on the December 29 episode of Raw, Manu was kicked out after failing to win. The following week, on the January 5 episode of Raw, Rhodes and Snuka defeated Cryme Tyme, but since it was Rhodes who got the pin, Orton declared that Snuka was out.

Priceless Reunited and Legacy

[edit]

On the January 12 episode of Raw, Snuka and Manu vowed to ambush Randy Orton, along with the returning DiBiase, giving Rhodes the chance to join them. As they ambushed Orton, DiBiase and Rhodes instead joined with Randy Orton attacked Snuka and Manu, severing their ties. DiBiase then formally joined The Legacy. Stephanie McMahon announced that Orton, Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase would participate in the Royal Rumble. Thus reuniting Priceless and making them both officially in Orton's stable The Leagcy.[34] On the January 19 episode of Raw Dibiase and Rhodes debuted a new theme and helped Randy Orton win a Six-Man Battle Royal.
