Fraichich

[edit]

Fraichich also known as Farashish or Frechich (Arabic: الفراشيش) are a large semi-nomadic, horse-riding and a warrior tribe of the High Western Steppe of Tunisia inhabiting the highest mountainous point of Tunisia, Jebel Ech Chambi aswell as the Mountains near Tebessa. They were described as being a mix of Berbers and Arabs, their 3 main branches are Awlad Ouezzez, Awlad Nadji and Awlad Ali.[1] In Tunsia their presence extends from El Kef to Gafsa.[2] In modern times they live on roughly 400,000 hectares. The Fraichich was considered one of the most powerful tribes in Tunisia during the 19th century and early 20th century

They are the descendants of the ancient Berber Frexes tribe which were located from Thala to Thelepte and contribued to the collapse of the Vandals. Antalas and his father, Guenfan transformed the Frexes into a Kingdom centered at Thala. Antalas was well known for leading a revolt against the Byzantines.[3]
