Thanks for your response and willingness to help out. Now I understand better why the articles were removed despite the offer I saw at the tail end of the Discussion for you and others to clean things up.

I think 95% of the "weasel word" claims are probably simply unsourced assertions made in the various readings which sadly never got documented in Wikipedia as opposed to students weighing in with their guesses about public opinion etc. I've got many other To Do's but will try in the mid to late September timeframe to systematically devote an hour or so a week on this, so if it's reasonable to somehow red-flag sentences that you otherwise would delete because they are unsourced (e.g., put in brackets with a boldfaced conoverc at the beginning so I can quickly spot these?) that might be the most efficient use of everyone's time. Anyway, sorry I myself couldn't do a better job as master editor on these. I essentially lost my TA mid-semester and it was a scramble just to keep up with the course. Best wishes, Chris Conover

Hi,

While seeing your user page I see you have a bit of a UK architechture fetish and it sounds as though you may study here. • Noone addressed my concern that there has to be an objective criterion that defines the list, so I see no reason to change my vote. You could say that the criterion is "must be an unprofitable automobile", but then you must provide profit figures (estimates are fine, but cite where you got them from). It seems infeasible to me because I don't know how verifiable automobile-specific profit figures are. If you can do it, good luck.  Cdcon  15:52, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

  I have addressed the issue, and quite extensively--however I mistakenly gave you the wrong link, which is here. It is my contention that although the criterion is subjective, it is uncontroversial and not likely to contain examples that don't belong there. Any gray areas can be explained--the beauty of a list. I have seen many people argue from your viewpoint, even arguing that "Tango singers" is too subjective in List of Tango singers. I see where you are coming from, but sometimes one has to overlook the vague criteria and realize that there is no problem with the list as it is, and will not be in the future. The Nutcracker (in answer to your question)

In my audio CD of "The Nutcracker", featuring the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Leonard Slatkin, each number is given a separate track. The Apotheosis is always combined with the Final Waltzin all performances, however. On the DVD of the Baryshnikov Nutcracker, however, the last ten minutes of the ballet are all lumped into one "chapter" - that includes the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", the "Tarantella", the "Coda", the "Pas de Deux", and the "Final Waltz and Apotheosis". First of all, thanks for reviewing me. The reason I jumped from test1 to test3 on that particular occassion was that the user had made the same (or at least a substantially similar edit) to the same article as they had been previously warned for by Tawkerbot. Given that, I felt there was no reason that the user would not already be aware that the edit was considered vandalism, and there was therefore no point in a test2 which basically states 'Please do not add nonsense/remove content. It is considered vandalism.' I'll bear your suggestions about Afd and Talkspace in mind, thanks again! Cynical 19:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

If it is part of the Poetry portal, it should be "Portal:Poetry/Selected article archive/March 2007", without the word Editing at the start. Regarding Lists

Just to be clear: I would happily see every stand-alone list deleted and no more created. Very happily. I recognize this is unlikely to happen; however, the compromise I'm looking for is one that limits lists only to the most important and fewest possible. Re: Portal:Poetry

Well, the general structure seems sound enough, but there are a variety of small—but jarring—formatting faults:

• Strange blank bar above the title of the portal.
• Thumbnail markup on images. Unless you set your background to transparent, the border around these will actually be a subtly different color. I would suggest using hand-aligned captions (as in Portal:War/Intro).
• The links at the bottom of boxes should all be on one line, either on opposite margins (as in Portal:History of science) or spaced with bullet points (as in Portal:Portugal).
• Images should all be at the top of their respective boxes.
• The "Selected image" box should have an explicit image credit.
• There's a non-functional show/hide button in the "Categories" box, and the formatting could probably be made somewhat cleaner, with fewer concentric boxes.

As far as content goes, the main thing you're missing is a box listing major topics. Hope that helps! Kirill Lokshin 04:11, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Later, the article was renamed to List of cars that were considered commercial failures, and someone else nominated it less than a month later not knowing that it was previously nominated. The result in that AfD was "delete".

Your question on AMA talk

Steve gave a pretty thorough answer, but you may be interested in reading Wikipedia:Guide to Advocacy which is a work in progress and not an official policy. In fact I hope we never need an official policy. One of the strengths of the group is that it is voluntary and informal. One of the values of the group is that it can obviate the necessity for a formal dispute resolution process, which in my opinion can tend to waste community resources that can be spent on writing a better and truer encyclopedia. Feel free to look over the guide to advocacy, and if it seems appropriate, edit the guide. As for your question about objective truth, my answer would be that we cannot find objective truth unless we are willing to look for it, and one of the main goals for myself as an advocate is to make sure that everyone has a voice, so that the truth doesn't become a matter of majority opinion, and so that valid viewpoints don't get repressed without being explored. Evaluation of the Poetry Portal

Hi,

Much of the groundwork has been done per the review by Kirill above. I will be nit-picking a bit.

• Avoid fair use/copyrighted images to appear on the main page. Ex. Imagists.jpg. Also note that the image didn't had any caption. While it is okay if there aren't captions, keep it consistant for all summaries.
• On Portal:Poetry/Selected article archive, I see that "Archive" is mentioned for articles only after August. I believe this was because the changes were made to it in August itself, but it wouldn't hurt to keep the whole history impeccable when only two minor changes are needed. Inconsistancy also present for Quotes, and other archives.
• I find it odd that article for december is already selected while that for October and November are yet to be selected. There isn't anything wrong with it (if it is fixed before the last moment), but probably a slip I feel worth mentioning.
• Try to keep the selected image always inside the frame for a good looking front page. I follow a 250px rule for images so that the overflow never occurs.
• Quotes archive shows inconsistant usage of mdash before name of the person quoted.
• DYKs should have a bullet (*) at the beginning. Also, the article that mentions the fact should be bolded.
• The first mention of "Benjamin Jonson" is not bolded currently. It is inconsistant with the rest of selected content, like the "Poetry" (in lead), and "Cædmon" (Selected biography).
• The title "Recent events" looks like a repeat since "News" is already mentioned. Remove it if only recent events are to be listed there.
• Include the portal browse bar ({{browsebar}}) at the top.
• Try to move the last part of the Intro; i.e. "WikiProject for Poetry | Things you can do | Categories of Poetry Articles...", etc. to a separate frame.
• Always try to make sure that correct, and recommended licenses are used for images being showcased in the portal. For example, Pro eto by rodchenko.jpg has a disputed template, Yeats.jpg has an obsolete template, etc.
• In my opinion, if a foreign language poem is selected, the original should be supplied first and translation later.

Porter and Hill quotes

Hi. The Porter quote has long haunted me, and I was reminded of it while reading through the new Geoffrey Hill book Without Title. I think the pair of quotes work together well, and they both serve as useful landmarks through the landscape. Hi, Adam! Thank you so much for your tone tag on the Michael Madhusudan Dutt page! That page is on my list of what I call "Wiki Failures" (a.k.a. "Wiki Failures (Sigh)" :-D). However, it is now the only Wiki Failure that clearly includes a notice that (essentially) points toward the article's POV (which is, at least in part, what makes it informal in style).

(The other "Wiki Failures" are listed on my user page. Interestingly, they are all related to Indian celebrities who lived long before this century. Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors! What's New? September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. I blocked the user before seeing your reply at AIV -- while looking through their contribs, I noticed what I'd consider a pretty strong pattern of editing. It's a soft block, one week long, given the IP's history. In retrospect, this may have been a bit trigger-happy on my part; if you'd like to reduce or negate the block, I have no objections. Deleted Article

You recently deleted an article with the reason "Questionable IP votes attacking logical established-user votes".

Can you please explain to me why this is a valid reason for a page being deleted, saying it seems to me you just looked at IP votes and said "Nah.. delete", even though that is not relevant to the article. f3llah1n ^(talk) 16:33, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Not the case. 6 of the 7 "keep" votes came from single purpose accounts whose only contributions related to that AfD. 1 of them has a total 6-9 edits with the only 3 AfD votes being in that article. A word on IPs

First off, I'd like to preface this message by congratulating you on your (extremely) recent RfA: you appear to have done fairly well since you received the mop, and I expect you'll do a fine job with it. Although, I don't know how I could possibly trust anyone with the word "wang" in their name - how immature! :)

Anyway, I noticed that you recently blocked the vandal IP 147.31.184.88 for three hours, and thought I could suggest an improvement for the future. I don't know if you've ever read Mindspillage's very excellent essay, but I believe its major point has some relevance here. Although the IP had been vandalising steadily for a while, and had received warnings in the past, you may have missed this message they left on their userpage shortly before they were blocked; Riana dzasta followed up on that by placing a {{Welcomeip}} tag on their talk page just one minute before you banned. Again, I'm guessing you missed that - not unreasonably - since they two happened so closely together that the change may not have been obvious to you at the time.

My suggestion is simply that you slow down a little, and ensure that the IP hasn't already stopped vandalising before issuing a block, even if it's only a short one. In this particular instance, since the IP hadn't vandalised any pages for forty-five minutes or so before the block, it would probably have been preferable to simply wait an hour or two to check that they hadn't continued to mess things up. Blocks aren't a punishment, they're a preventative measure: the IP appeared to have stopped vandalising, so it may have been the case that no prevention was truly necessary.

Your actions were reasonable and fair, and I'm certainly not saying that you made a mistake. I just thought I'd take a moment to promote a slightly more lenient kind of blocking policy. :)

My apologies-- I did miss that message on the userpage. I sort of remember that as I was issuing the block notice, I believe I had an edit conflict with the editor who added the {{welcomeip}} notice. I thought it was a nice thing to do, having such an outreaching attitude toward a vandal, but I also saw 8 or so warnings so I thought I'd administer a short block. But in any event, I can't justify my actions completely and I'm sure I was a little trigger-happy, trying to clear the backlog at WP:AIV. But I certainly don't want you to think that I am carelessly exercising my new powers and not investigating anything-- One of the things you learn on Wikipedia is that you have to check everything.
