Richard Halsey is a chaparral ecologist, writer, and director of the of the California Chaparral Institute. [1]

Biography[edit]

Halsey earned undergraduate degrees from the University of California in environmental studies and anthropology. During graduate work he received teaching credentials in life, physical and social science and a Master's in education. Richard taught biology for over thirty years in both public and private schools and was honored as Teacher of the Year for San Diego City Schools. [2][3] Halsey founded the Chaparral Institute in 2003 after the Cedar fire in order to educate people about the true nature of the chaparral biome and its relationship with fire. [4] He frequently appears on television and radio shows in the aftermath of California wildfires, including NPR, Voice of San Diego, Fox News and KPBS. [5][6][7][8] In January 2009 he was a featured guest in an episode of California's Gold. In 2012 he co-wrote the film Rites of Passage. He has also been trained as a Type II wildland fire fighter. Publications[edit]

Halsey is the Chief editor for The Chapparallian, the California Chaparral Institute's daily newsletter. In 2005 he published Fire, Chaparral, and Survival in Southern California, which won the 2008 Best General Non-Fiction from the San Diego Book Awards Association. [10][11]
