Appian Capital Advisory is a London-based private equity firm[1] specializing in metals and mining.[2][3]

History

[edit]

Appian was founded in 2012 and is led by Michael W. Scherb.[4]The firm invests in companies in metals, mining, and adjacent industries, with a focus on commodities required to power the green energy transition and providing inflation protection.[5][6][7] As of 2024, Appian’s AUM is $4 billion.[8]

Operations

[edit]

Appian operates worldwide, including in North America, South America, Australia, Europe and Africa.[9]

Since 2018, Appian has supported and brought nine mines to production.[10] Appian acquired Mineração Vale Verde (MVV), the operator of the Serrotte copper-gold mine, in Brazil from Aura Minerals in 2018.[1] The same year Appian bought Atlantic Nickel, the operators of one of the world’s largest open-pit nickel mines, also in Brazil, from bankruptcy.[11] In 2021, Appian agreed to the sale of these two mines to Sibanye-Stillwater.[12] Sibanye terminated the acquisition[13] in January 2022 and Appian filed for compensation.[14] In a 2024 ruling, the England and Wales High Court ruled that Sibanye Stillwater was liable for damages as a result of the unlawful termination of the $1.2 billion deal. The total damages will be determined in November 2025.[15]

In April 2023, Osisko Mining and Appian reached a four-year agreement to complete exploration, feasibility, and regulatory work at the Pine Point Mine in Canada; Appian acquired a 60% ownership interest in the Pine Point project.[16] In February 2024, Appian bought an additional 5% interest in the Pine Point project.[17]

In June 2023, Appian bought an 89.96% stake in the Rosh Pinah zinc mine[18] from Trevali Mining Corporation. In the same month 2023, Appian and Detronic Energia formed a joint venture to develop 20 solar plants with a total capacity of 62.4 MWp in Minas Gerais, Brazil.[19]

In December 2023, Appian invested in the battery metals producer US Strategic Metals (USSM), supporting the development of their nickel and cobalt mine and their hydrometallurgy recycling facility in Missouri.[20]

In October 2023, Appian invested in Urbix and signed a joint development agreement to develop a commercial graphite processing facility.[21] Urbix was selected to be awarded a $125 million grant from the US Department of Energy’s Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chain in September 2024.[22]

In 2024, Appian hired Former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab as an adviser. He chairs a partnership between the firm and SAFE- Securing America’s Future Energy, providing recommendations to the US government on critical minerals supply chains.[3][10]

Notable exits

[edit]

In 2018, Appian sold Avanco Resources, a copper producer, to Oz Minerals for A$418m.[23]

In 2021, Appian sold their interest in gold mining company Roxgold to Fortuna Silver Mines for $1 billion.[24] Also in 2021, Appian sold its royalty interest in the Caserones copper mine in Chile to Nomad Royalty.[25]

In 2022, Appian divested its 2% net smelter return royalty and credit facility in Harte Gold to Silver Lake Resource.[26] That same year, Appian sold its stake in Peak Rare Earths to Shenghe Resources Holding.[27][28]
