Scugog Soccer Association
[edit]The Scugog Soccer Association is a Scugog township based soccer club that was formed in 1979.[1] It is located on Old Simcoe road, in Port Perry Ontario.[2] The Scugog Soccer Fields have over a dozen pitches run and operated by less than a dozen employees and volunteers on 22 acres of land.[3] The soccer club is an affiliate of the Ontario Soccer Association (OSA) and operates under their guidelines, bylaws, and other policies.[4] Along with following the guidelines of the OSA, the Scugog Soccer Association adheres to the practices of Long Term Player Development which has been controversial in Canadian sports since its adaptation from Long Term Athlete Development in 2005. [5][6][7] Over the course of the summer, Scugog Soccer Association runs more than 45 local teams, bringing together approximately 400 families.[8] Several games and tournaments are also held for out of area teams throughout the summer. The Central Girls Soccer League, The Durham Soccer League, the Durham Old Timers Soccer Club, and many other soccer leagues hold their final tournaments at the Scugog Soccer Association annually.[9][10][11]
Age Groups
[edit]The Scugog Soccer Association consistently runs local teams from as young as under 4 to under 18 as well as adult leagues.[12] Under 4 through 6 soccer is a result of the Timbits Minor Sports Program, run by Tim Hortons Inc. who sponsor over 200,000 youth in sports across North America. [13] These under 4 through 6's, as well as the under 8, and under 10 age divisions are solely based in Scugog. Under 12 to 18 soccer in Scugog is integrated with under 12 to 18 soccer in Uxbridge, forming the North Durham Soccer Interlock (NDSI).[14] Alongside these older age groups, players with advanced soccer skills from the Scugog Soccer Association are teamed up with other North Durham players to create the North Durham United Football Club (NDUFC).[15] The NDUFC runs competitive rep leagues for these skilled players with home fields at the Scugog Soccer Association and Uxbridge Soccer Association.[16] Scugog Soccer also has a history of running local men's and ladies leagues.[17] Due to a lack of interest however, in recent years, the ladies are playing in Uxbridge, and the men have moved their team to Kawartha.[18]
Awards
[edit]In 2011, the Scugog Soccer Association was the recipient of the Meritorious Service Award for their club.[19] This award is one of few Center Circle Awards given out each year to "those who have made an outstanding contribution to the game of soccer in Ontario".[20]
