4/10/2007 Group of editors seek to increase quality and quantity of gay articles in Wikipedia
By the editorial staff
Since Wikipedia is a digital territory built thanks to the good will and dedication of many internauts, and using this to their advantage, a group of editors have decided to use the tool to increase both quality and quantity of gay articles inside the page.
The project, that intends to be a discussion forum for the subjects published on the website, also seeks to be neutral, not taking sides nor promoting opinions of select groups. Instead, the coordinators inform that the page will be a documental mean [sic] without geographical focus, i.e., for subjects that don't come only from Europe and North America.
The page is divided into many "departments" that supervise different parts of the gay (or of gay interest) articles of Wikipedia, before they are, albeit temporarily, done. That is, many definitios of the digital encyclopedia have to go through orthographic verification, translation, cleaning or even analysis by an expert on the subject.
In one of the finest sections of the project, biographies of essencial names of GLBT culture are named so that the users can complete them with more information and historical data. There are icons such as Andy Warhol, Abraham Lincoln, Leonardo Da Vinci, Lord Byron, Walt Whitman, Marcel Proust, Alexander, the Great, Socrates, Francis Bacon, Virginia Woolf, Gertrude Stein and James Dean. Another interesting part of the website is the one that "watches" gay articles, both the controversial and those that are merely within the scope. All those tasks and many others are performed by the 165 members of the project that, given the language limitations of each one, contribute with each one of the page's sections. Anyone can contribute, with the only requirement of joining in and informing the languages that you master.

The page is divided into many departments that manage different parts of gay (or gay interest) articles on Wikipedia, while under construction. In one of the best sections of the project, biographies of essential personalities of LGBT culture are identified so the users can enhance them with more information and historical data. Another interesting part of the website is the ability to "watch" LGBT articles, whether controversial or not. Anyone can contribute, even if only joining in to contribute in the major languages.

Some comments on the retranslation:
- I was trying to translate the meaning, and opposed to the exact words.
- The phrase "gay articles" sounds like an insult, so I changed it. It also seems to exclude the LBT from LGBT.
- After stating that the intent was not to be Euro-centric and North America-centric, a long list of names is provided which doesn't appear to include one name from outside those regions. Also, are they all gay ? I didn't think Lincoln was (although having to sleep with W:Mary Todd might turn any man gay, LOL).
- Does the project include locations of interest to the LGBT community, such as W:The Castro ? StuRat 05:07, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- That last question seems to be about the project itself, not about the translation. Yes, the project includes that article, as you can see on its talk page :)
- Good job translating the meaning: you "captured" the intended meaning better than whoever wrote it, as the original text is a little confusing.
- They chose to say "gay articles". It has the same meaning in Portuguese, but they did write it. I don't know how right it is for us to change it.
- I'm not sure "gay" has quite the same insult meaning in Portuguese, so let me describe what it means in English and you can tell me if it's the same in Brazil. Of course, in both languages it means "homosexual", and I suppose, the earlier but now obsolete meaning of "happy", too. I also suppose the "homosexual" meaning can be used as an insult in Brazil, when used by homophobics. However, there is another distinct meaning in the US, particularly common among kids (as often used in South Park). They tend to use it not to mean "homosexual", but as a mild insult meaning something like "uncool". For example, they might say "that movie was so gay !", even though there was no homosexuality in the movie. It was this meaning I was concerned about. Saying "gay articles" seems to take on that meaning of "uncool articles". This can be fixed by changing the phrasing to "articles about gay topics", or better yet, "articles about homosexual topics". Another option is to change it from "gay articles" to "LGBT articles", which also has the advantage of including the other groups. StuRat 17:53, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware of that third meaning of the word. Your change is fully justified then, and the right thing to do. A.Z. 21:53, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
- They did provide a long list of people from Europe and America after saying that the project was not Euro-centric and North America-centric. I must say: they could have done a really better job.
- But your job was just great! The text looks really nice and readable. Congratulations and thank you! I'll tell Dev that the translation is complete. A.Z. 06:21, 5 May 2007 (UTC)
