Francisco José Rivera Pantoja, known as Kiko Rivera, and more popularly known as Paquirrín (Seville, 9 February 1984), is a celebrity in the Spanish[1] media. At the beginning, he owed his fame to his parents, as he is son to the famous flamenco singer Isabel Pantoja and the deceased bullfighter Francisco Rivera, Paquirri (from whom he inherited the diminutive)[2], but over the years he became a celebrity known for his own appearances in gossip magazines and in TV programs. Currently, he is a singer, having already launched several hits.

Biography

[edit]

Kiko Rivera was born in a very popular family in Spain. He was the only son of the couple (married in 1983) formed by Paquirri, one of the most popular bullfighters from the 1980s and the actress and singer Isabel Pantoja, considered the main flamenco singer of the genre known as “copla”. Francisco Rivera had two children from his previous marriage with Carmen Ordoñez: the current bullfighters Francisco and Cayetano Rivera Ordoñez.

On 26 September, 1984, when Kiko was only 7 months old, Paquirri died while being moved from the arena in Pozoblanco (Córdoba), where he had been fatally gored by the bull known as Avispado during a bullfight[3]. This incident would mark Kiko Rivera’s image forever, best known since childhood as Paquirrin. His and his mother’s image started to appear on Spanish gossip magazines’ front pages (he was on the front page of ¡Hola! magazine before reaching the age of one), especially after the boy’s appearance on stage in one of Isabel Pantoja’s performances, singing a song with his mother. Later, this kind of situations led the singer to publicly denounce the media harassment his son had suffered since he was a child.

As he was keen on football, he tried to get into the Real Madrid junior team with the help of his family’s friendship with Ramon Calderon, but in the end he was not able to get admitted.

On 28 February, 2016, Kiko created his own Youtube channel, uploading a presentation video that same day.

Dalliance with the press

[edit]

In spìte of not having given many interviews troughout his life, he was constantly pursued by the celebrity journalism during his youth. Accused of being a ‘bad student’, ‘party lover’ and ‘womanizer’, he worked in a consultancy for some time, but he finally chose to make a living out of public relationships and advertising. Moreover, he took advantage of his fame to become the symbol of a brand of sofas and to take part in a furniture advertisement for TV.

His love relationships were also a matter of interest for the celebrity press: he was said to have an affair with Yola Berrocal and Nuria Bermúdez, who were followed by a long list of women that benefited from Kiko’s popularity to be acknowledged.

Leap to fame

[edit]

Already in September 2007, he was the chosen celebrity for the first episode of the programme Muchachada Nui on ‘Televisión Española’, the national TV channel, where Joaquín Reyes made a parody of the character traveling to Africa in search of an identity.

The eventual media explosion of Kiko Rivera occurred when the programme Sé lo que hicisteis...of La Sexta hired him for a temporary (section) called Desmontando a Paquirrín in May 2009. For that special programme, the channel also had candidates such as Belén Esteban, Mercedes Milá or Borja Thyssen. In Desmontando a Paquirrín, humorists and TV presenters Ángel Martín and Dani Mateo accompanied him for almost two months in a programme section that was about day-to-day situations and his immediate environment, with the excuse of helping him to prepare a monologue to discover his real vocation. The monologue of Paquirrín was broadcasted by La Sexta on the days 12 and 19 of July, and it constituted one of the greatest successes of the channel, as it achieved a 9.6 % of average audience share, being the second greatest release for a private channel so far. The second special show beat that figure and obtained a 10.2 % of audience share, corresponding to a total number of 1.421.000 viewers.

Owing to the success that Desmontando a Paquirrín achieved, his appearances as a collaborator in TV became regular: he was one of the main characters of the hidden camera programme ¡Qué más quisiera yo! in December, also broadcasted in La Sexta. His following appearances were already made for Antena 3 Televisión. He appeared in Espejo Público, where he talked about the next programmes in which he would be featured: Lo que deberías saber de mí and Pánico en el plató.

Media phenomenon

[edit]

Kiko Rivera’s public image gained bigger popularity after his successful appearance on TV channel La Sexta, becoming more and more regular in common press and being considered a media phenomenon. Such was his success that, during July, 2009, the word “paquirrín” multiplied its searches on Google from four months ago by ten. According to the engine itself, by January, 2010, his name appeared on approximately 94.700 websites.

The Paquirrín phenomenon has been challenged in some media sources and even pejoratively catalogued as historical by TV critics like José Javier Esparza, who claims that it is a “never-before-seen or at least not so clearly” success, “a show built on thin air”. In January, 2010, the daily newspaper 20 minutos, Spanish most-read newspaper in 2008, included him in their list “20 2009 ‘cuore’ stars”, as one of the twenty men who hit most headlines for the yellow press in the last twelve months.

His peculiarty has served to nickname other celebrities who held certain similarities with him: in January, 2010, Chile’s press published that football player Humberto Suazo, who had signed for the Real Zaragoza, had been nicknamed Paquirrín by the local fans, in reference to his presumed overweight. Spanish football player Santiago Cazorla, playing for Malaga C.F., had carried that same nickname for several years already.

His participation in the reality show Supervivientes 2011: Perdidos en Honduras led to a historical moment when his mother Isabel Pantoja, who had had legal issues with channel Telecinco for years, appeared on set.

In July 16, 2014, Telecinco broadcasted an exclusive and special programme dedicated to him (paid). This documentary was called “Así soy yo” (This Is How I Am) and apart from the programme, it included a debate presented by Jordi Gonzalez and featuring multiple yellow press collaborators such as Raquel Bollo, Mila Ximénez, Kiko Hernández and Sofia Cristo, among others. That same month, in an interview given to a Andalusian radio station, he revealed that he was working on a new project for TVE (Spanish main public TV station) with a wider spectrum, together with his record company Warner and Spanish composer Tony Sanchez-Ohlsson, and airing at the beginning of 2015.
