[edit]- What is the title of the article in which you identified a gap. If no article exists at all, what should the title be?
Fay Ku
- Document the gap you found, describe how you identified it, and analyze its impact on knowledge.
I chose the artist Fay Ku. She specializes in graphite, watercolor, and ink on paper. I discovered her through the Brooklyn Museum Feminist Art Base link provided in the assignment description. Although she is a prolific artist who has participated in many art exhibitions, many of which were solo art exhibitions, Fay Ku has no Wikipedia page. Fay Ku was born in Taipei but was raised in the United States and also studied in the United States. This gives her a transnational view, which she herself also comments on, and is invaluable to art and feminist art. However, since she does not have a Wikipedia page people cannot find out about her as easily. Wikipedia has become one of the easiest and most used education resources on the Internet. Although the Brooklyn Museum may catalogue many feminist artists, only people who were already looking for feminist art and knew about the Brooklyn Museum would be able to find it. When feminist art is googled, the Wikipedia page is the first website to come up. Therefore it is very important for such a prolific artist like Fay Ku to have a Wikipedia page. As a woman and a transnational artist, it is very important for her voice to be heard, her art to be seen. Without a Wikipedia page, she is effectively silenced and eliminated from what is supposed to be the culmination of all information on the Internet. This invokes the power dynamics of the mostly white male Wikipedia writers over women of color like Fay Ku.
