Travoprost ophthalmic solution is a topical medication used for controlling the progression of glaucoma or ocular hypertension, by reducing intraocular pressure. It is a prostaglandin analogue that works by increasing the outflow of aqueous fluid from the eyes.[1] It is also known by the brand name of Travatan and Travatan Z, manufactured by Alcon Inc. Travoprost is a synthetic prostaglandin F 2α analogue. Its chemical name is isopropyl (Z)-7- [(1 R ,2 R ,3 R ,5 S )-3,5-dihydroxy-2-[(1 E ,3 R )-3-hydroxy-4-[(α,α,α-trifluoro- m -tolyl)oxy]-1- butenyl]cyclopentyl]-5-heptenoate.[2]
Side effects
Possible side effects of this medication are:
- May cause blurred vision;
- May cause eyelid redness;
- May permanently darken eyelashes;
- May cause eye discomfort;
- May eventually cause permanent darkening of the iris to brown (heterochromia);
- May cause a temporary burning sensation during use.
- May cause thickening of the eyelashes.
- May Cause inflamation of the Prostate gland, restricting urine flow (BPH).
