Traumatic Livelihood is the debut studio album by English singer Jazmin Bean. It was released on February 23, 2024, through Aswang Birthday Cake, Interscope Records, Island Records, and Universal Music Group. It was set for digital download, vinyl, and CD. The album was promoted with four singles: "Piggie", "Favourite Toy", "Terrified", and "You Know What You've Done".[1]
Background[edit]
Bean stated that three singles meant for the album were scrapped. They were later released as stand-alone singles. The lead single, "Piggie", was released on June 9, 2023. Bean stated that they scrapped all their work after getting out of rehab. They state that they wanted to scrap the entire thing and start over to "avoid any sense of 'woe is me'".[2]. On October 7, Bean revealed the title, art, and track listing for the album.
Critical reception[edit]
NME reviewed the album and stated that "Bean continues to lean into these huge, powerful sounds across ‘Traumatic Livelihood’, allowing the arrangements to amp up the emotional impact of each song. Their theatrical vocal delivery is on full display throughout ‘Shit Show’, while ‘Favourite Toy’ is a more upbeat moment, despite its weighty themes of manipulation and deceit.". They stated that Traumatic Livelihood was a step foward.[3] DIY Magazine said that the album was "A 21st Century internet sensation in the truest sense". DIY states how "Best Junkie You Adore" was "squalor with intricate detail while Jazmin hops around a pretty vocal line.".[4]. StillListeningMagazine described 5 tracks, pointing towards "Traumatic Livelihood" as a track of self-empowerment, "Piggie" as a "dark theme with unflinching honesty, exploring the aftermath of trauma and the journey towards healing.", and how "You Know What You've Done", "channels raw emotion into a cathartic anthem of defiance, blending lush strings and tight live instrumentation with Bean's visceral lyrics.". [5]
