Teuku Wariza Aris Munandar (born 15 October 1998), also known as T. Warija Arismunandar, is an Indonesian activist and politician. He is the administrator of Gerindra Party and is known as leader of the Banda Aceh anti-Rohingya protest in December 2023.

Early life

[edit]

Munandar was born on 15 October 1998 in Gampong Baru, Pasie Raja District, as the eldest child of Fauziah and Teuku Rusli, a driver.[1][2] In 2010, during his time as junior school student at SD Teupin Gajah in Pasi Raja, Munandar won second place in the Al-Qur'an educational playground level speech competition.[2] On 12 March 2012, he became a first winner in a speech competition at the children's level and won the overall champion at the student level from three districts in commemorating the birthday of Muhammad which was held at the Darul Ulumuddiniyah Islamic Boarding School in Gampong Rambong, Setia District.[2] The award procession was witnessed by thousands of residents along with Dayah Darul Ulumuddinyah Leaders, Abuya Syech H Abdussalam Ghaliby, Head of Setia District, Amiruddin together with Danki Rifle E Yonif 115 Macan Leuser, Captain Khusnun, Danposmil Setia, Keuchik Rambong, and a number of Islamic boarding school leaders from South Aceh Regency, North Aceh Regency, Nagan Raya Regency, Aceh Singkil Regency, Ben Meriah, and West Aceh Regency.[2]

As of December 2023, he was a student at Al-Washliyah University in Banda Aceh.[1] Munandar joined the Gerindra Party by joining Hadi Surya Youth Front, an organization owned by Hadi Surya who was a Gerindra leader in South Aceh Regency.[3] On 31 March 2022, he was arrested in Jeulingke Village, Syiah Kuala Regency on charges of consuming methamphetamine, and was sentenced to two years in prison in September 2022.[1] By the time of the Banda Aceh anti-Rohingya protest in December 2023, he had been released.[1]

Anti-Rohingya protest

[edit]

On 27 December 2023, Munandar led hundreds of university students in Aceh, Indonesia, representing the Nusantara Student Executive Board to protest and demand the deportation of 137 Rohingya refugees from shelters at Meuseraya Aceh Hall in Banda Aceh.[4] He and other rioters stormed the shelter and forcibly moved the refugees to the Aceh Ministry of Law and Human Rights Office with a truck.[5]

The protest was covered by international media. Al Jazeera described the riot as the latest acts of discrimination against Myanmar's minority groups who are experiencing persecution, and the Associated Press who characterized it as a harsh act of hostility.[6] On 28 December, when his action was publicly linked with the Gerindra Party, Munandar denied it and said that the action was purely based on the results of joint deliberations with the student president.[who?][7] On 29 December, he forcibly moved the refugees again, this time back to Meuseraya Aceh Hall, due to the lack of proper facilities at the Ministry.[8]
