Copy to another wikipedia?

[edit]

How can I copy this template to the sl:Template:Void, in order to see sl:Kofi Anan (infobox copied from en:)? --romanm (talk) 23:10, 1 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You can't create an empty template. If you look at the History of this one you'll see it was created with something in it, which was then erased so as to leave the needed nothing. (SEWilco 03:56, 2 October 2005 (UTC))[reply]
I see. Thank you. --romanm (talk) 12:01, 2 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
He's wrong, write __END__ in the textbox and save it, a revision with no contents will be inserted into the database. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 05:06, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it looks to me like this template was created through erasure. Where is this __END__ thing documented? I'm sure you know what you're talking about, but we mere users sometimes need hints as to what you're talking about. (SEWilco 06:22, 22 October 2005 (UTC))[reply]
I don't know if it's documented anywhere, it's a magic word intended to allow one to save revisions with whitespace at the end (which would otherwise be trimmed), by placing it by itself in the textbox you can bypass the empty-field check and save a null-byte revision. —Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 10:20, 22 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If it isn't documented, users won't use it and is indistinguishable from magic. (SEWilco 15:06, 22 October 2005 (UTC))[reply]
The only reference to __END__ I've found is in German (de:Wikipedia:Wikisyntax/Glossar). SeventyThree(Talk) 01:31, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
 – Documented at mw:Help:Magic words. __END__ was a magic word that was removed in MediaWiki 1.8, January 2007. Paradoctor (talk) 06:23, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Use in Preload forms

[edit]

There's a use for this template that hasn't been cited yet: as a container of filling instructions for new pages created from preloaded text. Here's one example:

{{Subtract
|year_1 =         {{subst:void|=== fill in year_1 with your birth year ===}}
|year_2 =         {{subst:void|=== fill in year_2 with your death year ===}}
}}

When a page with such code is saved, the instructions simply disappear, leaving behind only this:

{{Subtract
|year_1 =
|year_2 =
}}

It's unfortunate that {{^}} redirects to {{void}}

[edit]

It's unfortunate that {{^}} redirects to {{void}}, since it would have been nifty to use {{^}} for exponents within the {{math}} template, e.g. {{math|''a''{{^|2}} + ''b''{{^|4}}}} instead of {{math|''a''{{sup|2}} + ''b''{{sup|4}}}} to get a2 + b4, so we can distinguish between an exponent and a superscript. 132.204.93.201 (talk) 19:04, 27 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Requested change: please combine the 2 "noinclude" tags - has no change in effect, but fixes "bad" coding procedures (IMO).

<noinclude>{{pp-template|small=yes}}</noinclude><noinclude>{{documentation}}</noinclude>

Please remove {{pp-template|small=yes}} - protection templates are automatically handled by the documentation page. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 06:35, 22 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
