Doing this as an edit request since I'm not comfortable enough with Lua to do it myself. But I'd like an element added to the module that fetches a user's pronouns (using {{Gender}}). {{u|Sdkb}} talk 20:10, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- Cc Tamzin — I think it's cleaner this way. After this request is completed, I plan to create something like {{User and pronouns}} that could be used. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 05:32, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- What exactly do you want the template to do? Like
{{User-multi|user=Example|gender}}
produces "Example (they)"? Nardog (talk) 05:36, 12 August 2023 (UTC)- Yes. Context is here. Cheers, {{u|Sdkb}} talk 05:54, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- A problem I see is that a user's preference set in Special:Preferences may not match their actual preference. Wouldn't it be better if we allowed the candidate to state their preference (i.e. put arbitrary text) in the nomination? Nardog (talk) 06:23, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- The code is here, but should it be "he"/"she"/"they", or some other combination? Should it link to some page (e.g. Wikipedia:Editors' pronouns#Editor-specific practices, Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal-i18n, mw:Help:Magic_words#Gender)? Nardog (talk) 06:33, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- "he"/"she"/"they" looks fine to me, and I don't think a link is strictly necessary. But I'll defer on that to @Tamzin or others who have more experience in this area than I do. {{u|Sdkb}} talk 15:15, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- I've implemented the edit request, using the more-or-less standard of "he/him, she/her, they/them". Tamzin seems indifferent to the formatting of it. I don't know if there's a phab ticket already, but mediawiki needs more gender options for things like "he/they" and "she/they", because I know a lot of people would benefit. SWinxy (talk) 20:56, 12 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, that e.g. "they/them" usually implies the lack of a secondary preference (as opposed to "they/she" etc.) is why I didn't include the objective forms. Nardog (talk) 02:32, 13 August 2023 (UTC)

Returning to this a few months later, I'm noticing a potential issue with using e.g. "they" alone, in that the way it displays on {{User and pronouns}}, someone looking at it out context might not realize that it's referring to someone's pronoun and wonder why there's a random "they" in the template. Anyone have thoughts on how best to resolve that? {{u|Sdkb}} talk 05:14, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
- Seeing no reply to the above, returned to SWinxy's original implementation. I don't think that this directly implies a lack of secondary preference — "she" and "her" are different pronouns — but it would be nice to come up with a better solution someday that doesn't leave any ambiguity. Removal of auto-generated link table
[edit]@SWinxy: I noticed that you removed the auto-generated link table here and here. I'm curious - why do you think that it is not good practice to auto-generate documentation like this? — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 12:38, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hey, Strad. I saw it as added complexity in the module, even though it did no harm. (It was also used here.) Generating the documentation itself is cool, but updating the docs aught to be a habit, like there's an expectation to. Plus, now non-templateeditors can modify the table. There is a typo of "Wikipedia" on line 653 as "Wikpedia".
-- en.wikpedia.org, or ja.wikibooks.org.
Can a template editor/administrator please change this to:
-- wiki.riteme.site, or ja.wikibooks.org.

https://xtools.wmflabs.org/ec/?username=Example&project=wiki.riteme.site now redirects to https://xtools.wmcloud.org/ec/wiki.riteme.site/Example . All 3 project = snippets.toolLang .. '.' .. snippets.projectLong .. '.org'
queries should be adjusted from makeUrlLink
to makeWikilink
. The backports one of my improvements in {{UserM}} to {{User2}}. The new URL is both shorter and saves readers' browsers' some time redirecting. 142.113.140.146 (talk) 03:07, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
