In "UK national newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals", move The Guardian and The Observer from Berliner format group to Tabloid format group. This will leave the first newspaper group (Berliner format) empty; it could be deleted but it might be clearer and simpler to comment it out as "deliberately left blank". https://www.theguardian.com/media/2018/jan/14/new-tabloid-observer-coming-next-week is one of various articles etc in the Guardian and Observer describing the switch. 92.19.26.167 (talk) 09:00, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Paper format or editorial style?

[edit]

The traditional use of the term "tabloid" to describe sensationalist journalism has of course been complicated by the near-abandonment of the broadsheet format, but the UK national newspapers, magazines, and other periodicals section seems inconsistent: i and The Times are listed as "compact", a term intended to differentiate former broadsheets from the traditional, sensationalist tabloids (i.e. a term based on both format and journalism style); Daily Express, Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday are listed as "middle-market", a term based solely on journalism style; and The Guardian and The Observer are listed alongside the red-tops, meaning "tabloid" here can only refer to the paper format. Is this merely a matter of the terminology each publication self-identifies as? It doesn't seem useful to categorise some papers in terms of their format, some in terms of their journalism style, and some in terms of both. I don't think there's a meaningful sense in which the Guardian and Observer are more similar to the Sun, Mirror and Sport than the Times and i. I would think they fit the "compact" label better. — TheJames (talk) 13:11, 5 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The Guardian is surely NOT a tabloid paper. It is a broadsheet-quality newspaper JUST printed in a tabloid format, like The Times or The Independent (before going defunct).

Please move The Guardian from Tabloid to Compact. 91.115.173.123 (talk) 20:17, 23 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
