[edit]

The genus citation for Syzygium should refer to P. Browne ex Gaertn, rather than Robert Brown. The Gaertner publication is from 1788 [1] and Robert Brown did not publish anything until ~1800. Gaertn's publication refers to Syzygyium Brown[2], but I myself am not who he was referring to. However the IPNI credits the genus as Syzygium P. Browne ex Gaertn[3], which correlates with the APNI[4].

P. Browne refers to Patrick Browne[5], who did some botanical work in Jamaica in the 1750s. He doesn't have any references to Syzygium but one for Suzygium[6], which fits with the etymology of 'syzygy'.

The link attached to the current reference seems to be dead, but the record for the genus Syzygium at GRIN also refers to P. Browne for the nom. rej.[7]

I am requesting that the text "Syzygium R. Br. ex Gaertn" be changed to "Syzygium P. Browne ex Gaertn" and the reference updated to the IPNI record (or a working GRIN link). This will be consistent with chronology, and also the APNI, IPNI, and GRIN records.

This issue is at the genus level, not the tribe level, so this edit request might be misplaced

To editor Felix.gif: yes this had to be  done to the information box in the Syzygium genus article. Thank you very much for the good catch! P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 16:42, 12 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
