Template talk:Ping group
Bad idea
[edit]Please abandon this idea. Being unable to find where on the page you were pinged is quite annoying. Matma Rex talk 21:21, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
- The point of it is to be able to pull someone's attention to the section. Finding one's own name is less important than reading the whole section. So, it does it's job quite nicely I think. Technical 13 (talk) 23:59, 23 November 2013 (UTC)

- The whole point is to be able to ping everyone in a group. For example, if Foo, Bar, Baz, Example, Derp, D'oh!, Technical-13, ShoeMaker, Technical 13 and MSGJ were all in a group that were known as "WikiProject FooBar", it would be much better to ping them all as WikiProject FooBar (Foo—Bar—Baz—Example—Derp—D'oh!—Technical-13—ShoeMaker—Technical 13—MSGJ) in a sentence like "Lets see if we can get some input on this by the people in WikiProject FooBar (Foo—Bar—Baz—Example—Derp—D'oh!—Technical-13—ShoeMaker—Technical 13—MSGJ)" instead of "Lets see if we can get some input on this by these people: Foo — Bar — Baz — Example — Derp — D'oh! — Technical-13 — ShoeMaker — Technical 13 — MSGJ:" or "Lets see if we can get some input on this by these people: @Foo, Bar, Baz, Example, Derp, D'oh!, Technical-13, ShoeMaker, Technical 13, and MSGJ:" (which won't even support ten names). Using a template like this is less disruptive to the conversation, requires the persons that respond to read the whole section to be able to know why they were pinged, and is more productive to the project (even if it takes an extra minute to respond). — Technical 13 (t • e • c) 22:02, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- The whole point is, I'm not going to read the entire thread just because someone sneaky-pinged me in it :) Matma Rex talk 22:29, 4 February 2014 (UTC)
- It might be more convenient for the person doing the "pinging" (awful term, BTW), but it is not convenient for the "pinged" people and it is annoying as you may (Technical 13—{}) discover ... — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:55, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Convenient and not annoying to me. I'll see what I can do to make it so that people can opt-in to always see the long list of names. That seems like the best compromise I can come up with. — Technical 13 (t • e • c) 16:00, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
- Wait... This feature has been in the template for some time...
span.pinggroup-pinged{
display: inline !important;
}
- Should do it as the documentation page has said. Is it not working for you for some reason? — Technical 13 (t • e • c) 04:39, 9 February 2014 (UTC)
I was just pinged with this template. It's obnoxious to have to view the source to see where someone has silently pinged me. I'm tempted to nominate this for TfD but I'd settle for modifying it to force the usernames to appear in text so I can see in the thread where I've been pinged. Protonk (talk) 17:59, 8 May 2014 (UTC)
- There are instructions for always showing the obnoxiously long list of names always if you wish, everyone else should not have talk pages disrupted in such a way if they don't want to see a list of 40 names pinged to a discussion. — Technical 13 (t • e • c) 14:32, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not going to add something to my CSS because a template is badly behaved. Protonk (talk) 16:58, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- More to the point, the disruption comes from pinging 40 people, each of whom gets a notification but can't find which part of the discussion they're referenced in because the template is hiding it from them. Further, it hides from plain view the fact that someone is alerting 40 people to a discussion. If I'm having a conversation with someone I'd like to immediately see if they're rousing other people to talk about the subject and either add more people or call them out on it if I feel it's inappropriate. Protonk (talk) 17:05, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
I went ahead and made this template show the list of pinged users by default. Everyone who wants to have it hidden can feel free to add appropriate CSS to their user styles. Matma Rex talk 18:46, 9 May 2014 (UTC)
- Looking better. Perhaps the
|lists=yes
should be the default option as that is the most intuitive? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:49, 15 May 2014 (UTC)
Update needed for documentation?
[edit]Greetings PrimeHunter, At this Teahouse archive there is mention of "the rules" to make ping work correctly. Here is a portion of that discussion:
Jordanengel1 A ping must be added in the same edit as a signature so your attempted pings in didn't work. You can make a new ping or post to User talk:Onel5969. The ping rules are complicated. The idea behind the rules is to avoid pinging users when old posts are archived, transcluded, copied, refactored and so on. The safest metod is to add a single new signed paragraph and change nothing else when you make a ping. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:24, 17 June 2016 (UTC)
Wondering if this knowledge should be put into ping group doc? BTW I really like the usefulness of this functionality. Regards, — JoeHebda • (talk) 18:53, 30 June 2016 (UTC)
Username limit
[edit]This template seems to be limited to 10 usernames. Is there a reason for such a limitation? I believe echo allows for 50 users to be pinged at once.- MrX 13:52, 14 January 2018 (UTC)
Misnested tags
[edit]Technical 13: This template has two misnested tag errors, for <small>
and <span>
tags. Please fix it. —Anomalocaris (talk) 10:57, 16 May 2018 (UTC)
Bug
[edit]It appears that having a space between the vertical bar character and the user name breaks the code. I suggest that should be fixed. Schwede66 08:57, 23 January 2020 (UTC)
